Derby are back at the iPro as they look to build upon their first league win of the season against an improving Villa side. Can the Rams make it back to back victories?

Derby v Aston Villa Preview

Derby

It’s not been the start that Nigel Pearson or Derby fans envisaged pre-season but they finally have a platform to build upon. A 1-0 win at Preston got the Rams got their first 3 points and are upwardly mobile. Considering the sheer number of attackers in the squad, it’s hard to see how they aren’t scoring with regularity. Goals in the league and cup have come from full back Craig Forsyth and centre back Richard Keogh so far, which is a worry. Jason Shackell, one of the few defenders who hasn’t scored yet said his side are evolving under Pearson’s tutelage and there is hope for the remainder of the season, but this looks like a tricky tie in front of the TV cameras.

Derby have had plenty of managers in the last 12 months or so and Pearson’s way is going to take to get through to the players. They’ve been unsuccessful in the transfer market so far, but their squad is packed with talent. Unfortunately, injuries continue to hit hard with Jeff Hendrick limping off against Barnsley last weekend and George Thorne a long term absentee. The former looks set to miss around 7-10 days of action. They have been linked with Aron Gunnarsson from Cardiff City who impressed at Euro 2016 and recently had a £7m bid rejected for Fernando Forestieri, but there’s still time for a transfer breakthrough before the window closes.

They had their chances against Barnsley last weekend, but couldn’t convert as Adam Davies made a number of impressive saves. Following their back-to-back 3-0 wins, the goalless draw with Brighton doesn’t look as bad now and if they can keep Villa off the scoresheet, they can surely find a way past the Villa backline.

Aston Villa

Villa were unsurprisingly being roundly mocked followed an opening day defeat to Sheffield Wednesday and a shocking cup exit at the hands of Luton Town. But they answered their critics with a 3-0 win over Rotherham and creditable 1-1 draw with Huddersfield. Villa look solid this season with just two goals conceded in the league and with Rudy Gestede and new signing Ross McCormack plying their trade up top, they have a genuine goalscoring threat. There is still much to work on and it will be a long hard season for the Villans.

McCormack has announced that his goal on Wednesday will be the first of many and the former Leeds and Cardiff man could be troubling the top of the goalscoring charts again come May. Mile Jedinak is the latest face to arrive in the West Midlands and he should improve the spine of the team. The tousled haired midfielder was a lynchpin in the Crystal Palace midfield until recently and should be a guaranteed started each week.

There will likely be more names to follow, but with the midfield bolstered and Tommy Elphick’s experience at this level proving crucial to the defence, Villa are looking decent again. The fans have tried to shake off memories of last season, but until their side are winning week in, week out, they will still be haunted by the defensive displays of Joleon Lescott and co. This is one of the toughest away trips of the season, but we said the same about the opening weekend visit to Hillsborough and Villa almost picked up a useful point there.

Derby v Aston Villa Predictions

Match Prediction

I’m finding it hard to pick these two apart. Derby haven’t been entirely convincing, but look reasonably solid under Nigel Pearson. Villa were close to picking up a point at Sheffield Wednesday and their strikers have started scoring. It could easily be a second consecutive home draw for the Rams.

Over/Under 2.5 Goals Betting Tip

Neither side will want to lose this one. I think Derby will make themselves hard to break down. They kept free-scoring Brighton off the scoresheet and the only goals they’ve let in came from Scott Carson mistakes.

Under 2.5 Goals – 5/6 with 888Sport: BET HERE.

Anytime Goalscorer Prediction

I don’t think we’ll see many goals here, but if there is going to be a goalscorer in this one, Ross McCormack might be the man to follow again. He notched against Huddersfield in midweek and has promised more. He’s off the mark and could make it 2 in a week.

Ross McCormack – 9/4 with Betfair: BET HERE.
