Championship Treble Tips for Saturday

Burton v Wigan – Draw

It’s a battle at the bottom in the Championship on Saturday afternoon as Burton host Wigan. The Brewers have a few injury problems ahead of this one with midfielder Jackson Irvine a doubt and new signing Luke Varney ruled out until mid-February. Ben Turner and Chris O’Grady are also hoping to make full recoveries in time for this tie. Nigel Clough’s side have been inconsistent this season but have been largely reliable at home. They’ve lost the last three here though to Newcastle, Huddersfield and Preston, but this should be a tough easier. Wigan have become much harder to beat under new manager Warren Joyce. They are still deeply embroiled in a relegation battle but they aren’t conceding many goals and Yanic Wildschut is always likely as the lone frontman. They beat Forest 2-0 in the FA Cup at the weekend and could be tough to break down once again. They’ve only conceded more than 1 goal in an away game once in the last 9 and held Derby and Barnsley to goalless draw on their travels recently.

Birmingham v Nottingham Forest – Birmingham win

Birmingham haven’t won under new boss Gianfranco Zola yet, but this is their best chance to pick up three points. The Italian has faced some difficult sides so far during his tenure including the top two, in-form Derby and a difficult Barnsley side. The 3-1 defeat to Brentford was arguably their biggest disappointment after a solid start on home soil this season, but they can bounce back against Nottingham Forest. The Tricky Trees are in process of being taken over with the new man in charge rumoured to want former Blues boss Gary Rowett in charge. Phillipe Montanier hasn’t been able to get any consistency from his side and is under pressure. Away from home, they’ve conceded 10 goals in the last 4 matches and 12 in 5. They’ve been defeated in 8 of the last 10 on the road and are likely to struggle against the Blues, who do possess firepower.

Birmingham to win

Preston v Brighton – Brighton win

These two sides drew 2-2 earlier in the season, but I believe Brighton have become more consistent and should get the job done here. It’s not an easy place to go, but Preston haven’t been consistent as they would have liked at Deepdale. They’ve won just one of the last six games here and lost heavily to Leeds, but did draw with Sheffield Wednesday. Brighton won at Hillsborough, Craven Cottage and St Andrews this season all against sides who are in and around Preston in the table. The Seagulls don’t give up on games and have scored last minute goals against Birmingham and Blackburn this season and I think their determination will get them the points here. Don’t be surprised if Preston score, but Chris Hughton’s side should have too much for them.
