Spurs to beat Fiorentina

You’d have to fancy Spurs here as Fiorentina have been poor on the road in Italy. They won at the weekend, but they had to squeeze past strugglers Atalanta and the North Londoners will give them a much harder time. They’ve won just two of their last seven away games in Serie A and have been largely relying on their home form to keep in touch with the sides above them. When travelling to the bigger teams – AC Milan, Juventus, Napoli – they’ve lost and I think Spurs can take advantage of any travel jitters. The home side may have lost in the FA Cup on Saturday, but that won’t be overly concerning as they concentrate on aiming to win the league and progress in this competition. It was a strong side that Pochettino put out in Italy and if he follows it up with a similar selection this time, they should take all the beating.

 

 Basel to beat St Etienne

The first leg of this match was a thriller and the match of the round. The return might be a little cagier as St Etienne look to hold onto their slender 3-2 lead. Basel will come at them though as they like to score goals. They’ve come back from the break in the Swiss league and scored 12 goals. I know it’s a lower level than the French league, but scoring goals breeds confidence and they will fancy their chances. St Etienne have improved over the last few weeks and have continued to be particularly strong at home. It’s a mixed bag away from home though and you worry that if they do too much sitting back, Basel can hurt them. They’ve kept just one clean in six now, so their defence isn’t at its best. I think the home side can grab the victory in 90 minutes and Basel go into our football accumulator tip.

 

Olympiakos to beat Anderlecht

Anderlecht are holding onto a slender lead in this one, but their mixed away form means they may be susceptible here. Olympiakos lost for the first time domestically this season as they went down 1-0 at AEK, but it’s hard to see them losing at home. With just the single goal advantage, Anderlecht will know they need to come out firing and grab a second. A crucial away goal. However, it’s just two away wins in five for the Belgians and they failed to net at Waasland-Beveren in their last trip which is cause for concern. Only Arsenal and Bayern Munich have beaten Olympiakos here and they haven’t conceded in any of their last four home matches.

 

Athletic Bilbao v Marseille – Draw

The Spanish side grabbed a crucial goal in the first leg against their French opponents. Adruiz scored a blinder to set up this second leg nicely. Disappointingly they failed to score when they lost at in-form Sociedad at the weekend, but they will be up for this competition. Their home form has been mixed recently with a 0-0 at Villarreal, but they did hit five against Eibar a few weeks ago. Marseille are a tough nut to crack and are actually better on the road, where they regularly hold teams. In the league, they haven’t lost on the road since they were narrowly beaten by PSG back in October and have been drawing 1-1 with some of the better sides like Nice, Lyon and Bordeaux. I think they’ll get at least something from this match and this draw selection completes Thursday’s accumulator tip.
