PSV v Atletico Madrid predictions and betting tips for the Champions League last 16 first leg on Wednesday 24th February and the best odds for our tips.
PSV Eindhoven play in the Champions League knockout stages for the first time since 2007 as they face a tough task against 2014 finalists Atletico Madrid and I have three football tips for this one.
PSV vs Atletico Madrid Predictions
PSV sit top of the Eredivisie having lost just one league game all season, winning 18 of their 24 league matches to lead Ajax by a point. They're the highest scorers in the division too, having scored 56 goals already, and since the winter break they've won all seven Eredivisie matches and the last three to nil. They couldn't head into this one in much better form.
Atletico Madrid are in poorer form. They're still second in La Liga, but trail Barcelona by eight points after winning just two of their last seven. One of their problems of late is they're not scoring enough goals. Defensively though, as we've come to expect from Diego Simeone's side, they have been superb, only conceding 11 in 25 league games – the joint best record along with Bayern Munich in Europe's top five divisions.
PSV finished second in their qualifying group behind Wolfsburg. They were impressive at home, winning all three games at the Philips Stadion, but didn't win any away. Atletico eased through their group, only losing once and winning four as they qualified as Champions League group winners.
PSV have been scoring plenty, in the main thanks to striker Luuk De Jong who is the Eredivisie's leading goalscorer with 17 goals. The bad news for them is he's suspended for this one and will be a huge miss. Andres Guardado and Maxime Lestienne may be fit enough to play a part though.
For Atletico, Tiago is still out with a long term injury and Yannick Carrasco and Thomas Partey are also out with ankle and hamstring injuries respectively. Diego Godin and Stefan Savic came through the draw at Villareal unscathed so should play in this one.
For all of PSV's good work this season and their 100% home record in this competition so far, this is a huge test for them. Atletico might not be firing on all cylinders lately but even when they're not playing well they're an incredibly hard side to break down. Without the services of De Jong too I can't see a way past the tough Atletico midfield and defence for my football betting tips this week. More than that, I can see Atletico nicking this one in a close game.
My first PSV vs Atletico Madrid prediction is a correct score tip and I'm betting on the away side to win 1-0, get on it with Bet Victor at 11/2.

I can see the argument for PSV scoring here, yes they're the Eredivisie's leading goal scorers, but they haven't come up against a side of Atletico’s quality all season. They are one of the most underrated sides in Europe, certainly that's left in the competition, and I think Atletico to keep a clean sheet here is a pretty good bet.
My second PSV v Atletico Madrid prediction is for Atletico Madrid to keep a clean sheet at odds of 11/10 with Bet365.

Even if I've got these Champions League predictions horribly wrong and it's PSV who are victorious or gain a draw to take into the second leg, there won't be many goals here. I like the look of 0 or 1 goal in this at 15/8 with William Hill, but I'm taking the odds for a different bet on this one.
My final football prediction for PSV v Atletico Madrid this week is exactly one goal to be scored in the match; the best odds are 3/1 at Ladbrokes.
