Torquay
A late season run saved Torquay from relegation last season as they rallied and picked up enough points to survive. The Gulls have started life in mixed fashion this time around. They have always been stronger at home and they have picked up 7 points here so far, remaining unbeaten.
Two players have arrived recently. Jamie Reid hasn’t had far to travel as he joined on loan from neighbours Exeter. He is a familiar name to Gull’s fans as he has previously been on loan here in 2015. He’s also had a spell with Dorchester. He’s made 24 starts for Exeter, but has fallen down the pecking order. He should score goals at this level and got off to the perfect start by netting against Braintree on Monday.
Giancarlo Gallifuoco has turned his non-contract terms into a permanent deal and will bolster the backline. He was also on the scoresheet in the 3-1 win on Bank Holiday Monday and cleared one off the line at the other end. Braintree are not the force of old since the departure of Danny Cowley and a number of key first teamers, but this was an impressive victory on the road.
Kevin Nicholson said ‘the feelgood factor was back’ after the away success and they’ll be looking to carry it through to this tough looking clash. It’s two wins in a row now and they are working up a head of steam moving 5 points above Monday’s opponents Braintree who occupy the final relegation spot. Reid is likely to start ahead of Brett Williams for this one.
Lincoln
We’ve already mentioned Danny Cowley, who left Braintree in the summer to join Lincoln. He did a magnificent job with a miniscule budget in Essex and has rightly earned his move to Sincil Bank.
After a positive start, it didn’t go according to plan when they were beaten by Sutton, going down to 10 men in the process. They have managed to put the disappointment of two successive defeats behind them though with three consecutive victories.
Gateshead were a tough looking prospect on Monday, but Lincoln swept them aside with relative ease and minimum fuss, cruising to a 3-0 victory. It was a second consecutive clean sheet at home.
They were ruthless and it was a real marker put down by the Imps. The victory took them to 3rd in the table, but it was the first time they’d dispatched a side who will be troubling the top six. It also the biggest crowd of the season inside Sincil Bank and despite complete dominance, Cowley insisted there was still room for improvement.
Lincoln are looking to return to the Football League and Cowley looks like he might be the man to do that. Tranmere are the early season frontrunners and Lincoln will be looking to catch them. They have goals in the side with Matt Rhead once again firing this season and 8 of the starting 11 have netted this season. Sean Raggett even got in on the act against Gateshead.
Torquay v Lincoln Predictions
There’s plenty of momentum about both of these sides, but I’ve got to side with Lincoln to win for my first Torquay vs Lincoln betting tip which is 11/10 with Paddy Power. Not only are they on a run of three consecutive wins, they recently beat Macclesfield away. The Silkmen are often strong on their own patch and that was a significant result.
