Peterborough v Swindon Preview

Peterborough

Posh have been frustratingly inconsistent at the start of this season and they are a tough proposition to work out. It’s never quiet at London Road and this week they’ve been hammered 6-1 in the cup, seen George Moncur arrive on loan, waved goodbye to Joe Gormley and Kgosi Nlthe and their keeper has handed in a transfer request. Plenty to take in ahead of their match with Swindon which welcomes the Sky cameras along.

George Moncur is a terrific addition to the midfield. He excelled for Colchester last season despite their relegation (blame the rest of the squad) and was plucked by Barnsley. Perhaps he needs another season at this level before he’s Championship ready but he’ll certainly thrive in a team that likes to play football.

Posh hammered Millwall 5-1 in their last home game in the league and will be confident ahead of this one. They were beaten 1-6 in the EFL Trophy in midweek by Norwich U23s and those who have attended both games will have suffered mixed emotions, but got value for money!

Grant McCann is the right fit at the club and the players are clearly responding to his ideas. They still suffer from lapses at the back, but going forward they can be ruthless. Paul Taylor should be back for this one after being rested in midweek. He is likely to replace Shaquille Coulthirst whilst Tom Nichols is expected to retain his place in the side.

They’ve hit 11 goals this season already and should be able to find a way past Swindon. Their only defeat here came against a well-organised Bradford side and they were recently beaten on the road against an improving Oxford side. Last week saw them complete the ‘perfect away performance’ according to their boss as they ran out 2-0 winners against MK Dons.

Swindon

Swindon have been in the news this week, but not for the right reasons. Their chairman said he wasn’t willing to refund fans who paid for tickets for the abandoned match with Bristol Rovers last weekend. Supporters will have to buy new tickets in order to attend the rearranged game. This has not gone down well.

On the pitch, Sean Murray arrives from Watford which is an excellent addition to the squad. The midfielder was once one of the hottest prospects in English football, but hasn’t been given the game time by his employers. He will certainly benefit from regular football in Wiltshire.

The Robins have only lost once this season and won two of their four games. They’ve been very solid at home with two clean sheets to their name. They had also successfully kept Bristol Rovers at bay before the rain arrived and forced the game to be called off.

Their most disappointing performance came in the 3-1 away defeat at the Proact Stadium where Chesterfield gave them a footballing lesson. They didn’t perform well on the road towards the end of last season either with no win in their last six and failing to score in four of those fixtures.

Michael Doughty was a good addition and there are high hopes for young James Brophy. The Robins didn’t have a fixture in the EFL Trophy this week and have the benefit of an extra few day’s rest, but this will be a stern test.

Peterborough v Swindon Predictions

Although Swindon have the benefit of an extra few day’s rest, their away form is a real concern for me. Posh put in a perfect away performance to see off MK Dons. The side which played in the EFL Trophy will be much changed and the addition of George Moncur is a big plus. My first Peterborough vs Swindon prediction is for the home side to win and the best odds are 10/11 with Paddy Power.

Peterborough games always seem to involve goals and I think Swindon can play their part. Extremely tough to break down at home, the Robins are a lot more open on the road. Posh hit 5 in their last home match so my next football tip for this weekend is over 2.5 goals to be scored at 4/6 with Coral.

Gwion Edwards hit two goals in the 5-1 win and he is a decent price to get a goal here. The winger was always a talent at Crawley and is always capable of producing the sublime so at some favourable odds my final Peterborough v Swindon tip is for Gwion Edwards to score anytime.
