Sunderland’s inability to turn draws into wins has cost them dearly of late, their 0-0 draw at home to West Brom was definitely a case of two points dropped. They’re many people’s favourites to beat the drop despite taking up the final relegation place, they have a game in hand over the teams above them and in Sam Allardyce they possess someone who has never been relegated in his managerial career. Still, with Norwich City starting to find some form the Black Cats need to follow suit and soon if they’re to maintain their Premier League status.
They couldn’t face a much tougher side than table toppers Leicester City. This time last season the Foxes were facing a relegation battle of their own, fast forward 12 months and it’s looking more and more likely with each passing week that Claudio Ranieri will do the almost unimaginable and lead his side to Premier League glory.
Both sides have almost fully fit squads to choose from. Duncan Watmore is out for the home side with an ankle injury and the away side may have to do without Jeffrey Schlupp again who is recovering from a knee injury. Ranieri is likely to stick with the same line up that started in the 1-0 win against Southampton, he’s made a league low 25 changes to his starting line ups this season.
Leicester only need four wins from their remaining games to get their hands on the Premier League trophy but I’m not sure one of those will come here. They’ve won five of their last six by 1-0 scorelines but they were arguably fortunate not to concede against the Saints last time out, particularly with two penalty decisions going their way. With Sunderland on home turf and desperate for points I think the Mackems could nick a draw here. Tight game on the cards for me, a draw is the most likely result. Much of Leicester’s success this season has been based on clean sheets and one goal wins, but I think Sunderland will score here. By the time these two meet 17th placed Norwich would have already played fellow strugglers Crystal Palace and if the Canaries get a win there Sunderland will be in desperate need of at least a point. There won’t be many goals in this, Sunderland have tightened up at the back in recent weeks but to keep Leicester quiet, who have scored in 29 matches this season is a huge ask.
