Wednesday are looking to cement 6th place in the Championship with a winnable game at home to their neighbours. In contrast, Rotherham desperately need the points to boost their survival hopes and avoid dropping into League One. The Millers currently occupy 3rd bottom position staring up at a three point gap between themselves and MK Dons.

 

They did get their first victory under Neil Warnock at home to out of form Brentford last weekend and that should give them confidence coming into this tie. They’ve won eight times this season, but only two of them have been away from home.

 

A trip to Hillsborough is a daunting task for Warnock and his men as the Owls have superb home form and other than the suspended Fernando Forestieri, Ricardo Carvalhal has a fully fit squad to choose from. It’s a busy week for both clubs with a Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday schedule for all Championship clubs and with Wednesday heading to the South Coast on Tuesday, Carvalhal will want to keep his squad at their peak.

 

They need to start scoring again with just a single goal converted in the last three games, admittedly the back to back suspensions of the creative hub that is Fernando Forestieri won’t have helped matters and won’t be ideal for this fixture either.

 

The Italian has twice faced the wrath of the officials for supposed play-acting and the maverick Italian will be sorely missed. With the Rotherham defence far from watertight, his vision and skill would have been perfect for this encounter.

 

The fact that Rotherham have lost 13 of their 17 away matches this season should give hope to Owls fans after their mini-blip. Carvalhal has said he won’t be changing his style as we get to the business end of the season, which is good news for those who like easy on the eye attacking football.

Rotherham cannot afford to be as picky about their style of football, they just need the points, but they have an experienced manager at the helm, who might just get enough out of his side to get them over the line. They don’t score enough goals though, averaging 0.82 goals a game this season. It’s just three in their last six though for the Millers.

 

The hosts are not quite as short as I envisaged when I saw this fixture listed and are still backable. They don’t lose often here and with Rotherham’s woeful away form factored in, it’s got to be a Wednesday win.
