Their Achilles heel though, their home form. They just can’t seem to collect all three points at Fratton Park in front of their own fans. They are blessed with a huge following and they should be spurred on by their vocal supporters, but for whatever reason, it seems to be having the opposite effect.

 

They’ve only lost once here, but they have only won twice, the first being on the opening day of the season back in August.

 

They’ve bought in Marc McNulty from Sheffield Wednesday in another bid to try and solve the goalscoring problems, it will add competition for the places up front. They already appear to have plenty of firepower with Adam McGurk, Connor Chaplin, Kyle Bennett and the seemingly underused Matt Tubbs. They also have a goalscoring midfielder in the shape of Gareth Evans.

 

They shouldn’t really be struggling to put together a sequence of results at Fratton Park, but for whatever reason they are and it’s something that Paul Cook is getting increasingly frustrated by.

 

They’ve drawn five home games this campaign, including their last three and are looking for only their third home win of the season in front of the sky cameras on Sunday.

 

They come up against AFC Wimbledon, who are in a purple patch at the moment, having won all of their last three matches. They’ve also taken maximum points from four of their last six matches. This won’t be easy for Portsmouth against a team playing well under Neal Ardley. They score plenty of goals as well; they were involved in that crazy 2-5 with Morecambe just a couple of weeks ago.

 

They disappointed in the FA Cup though losing to Forest Green, although the Gloucestershire club are in really good form and are troubling the top of the National League. They’ll be up for this and Ardley will be drumming it into his team that they need to bounce back here.

 

He ‘slammed’ his players for being unprofessional after the cup exit and they’ll have his voice ringing in their ears as they take to the field in Hampshire. For my football betting tips this weekend I think they’ll be able to take something from this game, but I don’t think it will be all three points. I think it might be another home draw to add to Portsmouth’s collection.

AFC Wimbledon kept just their second clean sheet last time out against Hartlepool, but they have been at home and they’re yet to keep an opponent out away from home. The reason they haven’t been dwindling at the bottom of the table is because they are always have a goal or two in them.

 

They’ve only failed to score three times this season, one being on the opening day and the others being against Luton and Oxford. With Portsmouth shipping two to Notts County last time out, they still have a few defensive frailties and I think we should see an entertaining match.
