League Two play-off betting tips

Plymouth vs Portsmouth Betting Tips & Predictions

Plymouth vs Portsmouth predictions and football betting tips for this weekend’s League Two play-off second leg following a 2-2 draw in the first leg.

An entertaining draw on Thursday night means it’s all to play for on Sunday evening in Devon as Plymouth host Portsmouth in the second leg of the League Two Play-Offs, our football tipster has picked the best three bets for the match.

Plymouth v Portsmouth Betting Preview

Plymouth

Jamille Matt was the man who netted twice in the first leg, but all the talk was about his alleged headbutt as opposed to his fine finishing. Matt escaped any punishment and likewise Paul Cook, who was sent to the stands, will be allowed in the technical area once again. Cook was dismissed for squabbling with Plymouth assistant Paul Wooton, but will be able back on the touchline on Sunday evening.

Plymouth were under the cosh late on, but held out for the 2-2 draw and they will surely feel that have the advantage going into the 2nd leg. Home Park will be roaring their side on and it can be an intimidating place to visit. A bumper crowd watched the 5-0 mauling of Hartlepool in the final day and they’ll have this stadium rocking.

Derek Adams has called upon the ‘Green Army’ to roar his side onto success and act as the 12th man. They’ve only won twice in the last six matches here though and although many will see Plymouth as favourites, they have been unpredictable at Home Park and were recently defeated by already relegated Dagenham. Pompey’s away form isn’t entirely convincing either though and it’s set to be a fascinating 90 minutes. Don’t be surprised if extra time or penalties are required to separate the two outfits.

The Pilgrims ended the season in style, hitting five past Hartlepool and they had the luxury of resting a number of key players ahead of the two legged showdown. Derek Adam’s side defended diligently in the second half as Portsmouth enjoyed plenty of possession and offered ample width. Kyle Bennett was replaced by Kal Naismith and it gave the Pilgrims plenty to think about. Gary Sawyer and Curtis Nelson held the line superbly though and kept a determined Pompey at bay.

Portsmouth

Portsmouth got back into the game through a Gary Robert’s penalty and what an important goal that could be. The game threatened to spill over, but the former Chesterfield man kept his cool and slotted his side level. Pompey threatened towards the end and had a number of chances to grab a winner. They couldn’t convert and they’ll be looking to get off to an equally fast start once again.

Cook has promised to go on the attack from the beginning here and the outspoken boss believes that the pressure is on the home manager. According to the Pompey boss, Adams will have to decide whether to attack Pompey or sit back and absorb the early pressure. The Scouser hopes his side can be a little more clinical and improve their decision making, particularly in the final third.

Although far from consistent on the road, they’ve won three of the last four away from home and Paul Cook and Leam Richardson will be hoping to keep that run going. They’ve lost just once since the start of March on their travels – a very odd 3-1 defeat to York City. They have been known to drop silly points, but they can’t afford to switch off here. Injury problems restricted Paul Cook’s selections on Thursday, but he should have a few extra faces back here and they have an impressive array of faces to call upon.

Plymouth vs Portsmouth Team News

  • There were a few knocks and bumps from the first leg with Derek Adams saying his squad will be assessed on Sunday morning.
  • Curtis Nelson played a full 90 minutes after taking an early knock. He should be fine to start here at Home Park.
  • Argyle used only two of the subs on Thursday with local lad Ben Purrington coming on for 10 minute and Craig Tanner getting even less. Reuben Reid is pushing for a start though – he had to settle for a place on the bench at Fratton Park.

  • Kyle Bennett and Marc McNulty were thrown back into the side after overcoming injuries. Kal Naismith and Adam McGurk are waiting in the wings if changes need to be made.
  • There’s positive news for Pompey as Ben Close, Connor Wilkinson and Matt Clarke could all be back from injury whilst Connor Chaplin could give them another option up top.
  • Kieran Freeman is still suspended after his rush of blood against Northampton.
