Football Accumulator Sunday 15th May
Utrecht v PEC Zwolle – Utrecht to win
The first, and certainly the toughest on paper gets cracking at 13:30pm in the Dutch Eredivisie as Utrecht take on PEC Zwolle in the second leg of their semi-final playoff. Both of these two sides played out a surprisingly unremarkable stalemate in the first leg, so there’s all to play for this Sunday in the Stadion Galgenwaard. Although neither side boasts outstanding form heading into the clash, Zwolle’s away record over the last half of the season has been extremely poor. The visitors have only won once in their last ten on the road, drawn two and lost the other seven. Whilst Utrecht are hardly unbeatable at home, their points return is still decent and they did beat Zwolle both home and away over the course of the season. In addition to this, they also finished three places higher than them in the overall table at the end of the campaign, and I fancy them to edge this one to get us off to a winning start.
Everton v Norwich – Everton to win
Our second choice comes to us from the final day of the Premier League season as Everton host Norwich at Goodison Park. Had Roberto Martinez not been sacked earlier in the week, I wouldn’t have touched this match with a barge pole. However, now that we’ve seen the back of the Spaniard, I wouldn’t be surprised if The Toffees actually put on a bit of a show for any potential new manager. After all, they are all playing for their places again. Opponents Norwich will no doubt be flat as a pancake after being relegated without kicking a ball on Wednesday night. Although they performed admirably in their 4-2 victory over Watford, the damage had already been done in the four straight defeats that proceeded it and they will now join Villa and Newcastle in The Championship next season. Therefore, back Everton to come out on top in this one.
Chievo v Bologna – Chievo to win
The penultimate match is the first of two games from Italy as Chievo host Bologna at 17:00pm. The hosts have had a solid campaign to date and this has seen them secure a top table finish regardless of the result against Bologna on Sunday. However, it has been their home form over the last half a season that has been particularly impressive. Chievo’s only defeat in the last eleven came at the hands of champions Juventus, and they are currently on a seven match unbeaten run at the Marcantonio Bentegodi. In stark contrast, opponents Bologna have been having an absolute shocker on the road in recent weeks and have only managed six points and three goals in their last eight games. Chievo won the corresponding match 1-0 earlier in the season, and if they continue with their fine home form, I can’t see Bologna being much of an obstacle to negotiate this time round either.
Lazio v Fiorentina – Lazio to win
Our final match for the accumulator tip is in Serie A once again and the 19:45pm kick off between Lazio and Fiorentina. Upon first glance this clash might look like a bit of a coin flip, but the difference in form is actually quite significant. Lazio are finishing the season reasonably strongly and have won four of their last six matches, as well as their last two at home against both Inter Milan and Empoli. Fiorentina are currently in the bottom three of the Serie A form guide after a woeful run of only one win in their last eleven matches. Considering they actually led the league earlier in the season, this is quite the turnaround. In addition to their poor run, goals have also completely dried up for the visitors in recent weeks and Fiorentina have only managed to find the net twice in their last five away games. On the other hand, Lazio have only been shutout once in their last ten and this was away to Juventus. With all these facts in mind, back Lazio to steer the ship home on Sunday evening.
