Newcastle vs Huddersfield Preview
Newcastle
Newcastle suffered disappointment on the opening weekend of the season as they were unable to find a way past a determined Fulham side losing 1-0. A Matt Smith winner was enough for the Cottagers to take all three points and suddenly the Championship looked a lot tougher for Rafa Benitez and his men.
They will be strong at home though with the vociferous crowd cheering them on at St James’ Park. They only lost five times all season in a disappointing Premier League here, so they’re bound to be strong at this lower level.
Moussa Sissoko has somewhat embarrassingly issued a ‘come and get me’ plea to Real Madrid as he plots an exit from the North East. He hasn’t impressed in a black and white shirt and I don’t imagine too many fans will be sad to see him go.
The Toon are hoping to make three new signings ahead of the weekend with one of them though to be Brendan Galloway on loan from Everton. A striker is also thought to be on Rafa Benitez’s hitlist. Riviere is likely to be sold whilst Mitrovic will be absent for the next couple of games at least.
Benitez watched as his side struggled to create chances for Dwight Gayle and Ayoze Perez in West London, but there are several new faces still looking to gel. Mohamed Diame and Ciaran Clark could make their debuts here for the home side. The former is experienced at this level and scored the winner in the play-off final in May.
Jamaal Lascelles has been made captain for the season and he is looking to establish a partnership at the back with Grant Hanley. The Magpies were woeful at the back last season, they will surely be tougher to breach this time around.
Lascelles has promised that the Newcastle side won’t lack character with him as captain this season and that they will fight for promotion back to the Premier League. It needs to start against Huddersfield.

Huddersfield
The Terriers got off to the ideal start with a 2-1 victory over Brentford on the opening weekend. David Wagner’s side look an exciting prospect and should be a joy to watch particularly at the John Smith’s Stadium. They have been able to attract large crowds to cheer on the side and picking up three points on the opening day was important especially with Aston Villa, Wolves and Brighton all coming up in the next five games.
There’s some uncertainty over the future of Nakhi Wells though who started on the bench last weekend. He also remained in the dugout in midweek despite Huddersfield trailing 2-1 to Shrewsbury in the EFL Cup.
Wells has been suffering from a knee injury so perhaps Wagner is easing him back slowly. Both Derby and Norwich are interested in the Bermudan international and he could be on the move before the 31st of August. Wagner suggested that the long ball game that they were forced to employ wouldn’t have suited the striker. New signing Elias Kachunga arriving from Germany got off to the perfect start scoring two in two for his new side whilst there were also debuts for Rajiv Van La Parra, Jack Payne and Aaron Mooy.
I’ve no doubt that Brentford will be competing at the right end of the table come May, but this really is a step up for Huddersfield and a test of Wagner’s tactical credentials. They’re the first side to step into St James’ Park this season, but perhaps facing them before they gather any sort of momentum could be a touch of fortune?

Newcastle v Huddersfield Predictions
I think Newcastle can get their first points of the season and that’s where my first Championship prediction is going to focus. They’ve had a little more rest and St James’ Park is a formidable place. They were unbeaten here in the 2009-10 Championship season. I do think Huddersfield will make a game of it and I think they can get on the scoresheet but the betting odds for Newcastle to win and BTTS appeal for my first Newcastle vs Huddersfield prediction.

I think Diame will be a decent addition at this level and I think he can make his mark here. The fans should warm to his all-action displays and his odds in the goalscorer markets appeal. Diame is best odds 15/2 first goalscorer against Huddersfield but my second Newcastle vs Huddersfield betting tip is Diame to score anytime.
Anytime Goalscorer Prediction – Mo Diame – 5/2 with William Hill: BET HERE.

I’d also take a look at the in-form Elias Kachunga for another anytime goalscorer tip, he’s got off to a very promising start and could be prolific for Huddersfield this season.
