Championship predictions for Middlesbrough vs Ipswich and the best football betting tips for this weekend’s Saturday afternoon kick-off.
Middlesbrough will feel a little hard done by after being pegged back late on by Burnley on Tuesday. They will look to bounce back at home to Ipswich. We’ve got the best bets for the match.
Middlesbrough vs Ipswich Preview
Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough remain two points clear at the top of the table after their draw with Burnley in midweek. It was a better result for the Teessiders than their opponents as they remained top of the pile, but both sides will be wary of a swashbuckling Brighton, who are lurking in 3rd place. Boro are back at the Riverside today where they have won a whopping 16 games this season and lost just two. They’ve conceded just seven goals at home all season and this is a tough ask for an out of sorts Ipswich side.
Jordan Rhodes is a man on a mission. A mission to repay his £9 million price tag and Aitor Karanka’s faith in the striker. He has now netted three times in the last two games and will give the Ipswich backline something to think about.
With a trip to Birmingham and a crunch match with Brighton on the final day of the season to come, Middlesbrough need to make this one count and they’ll be confident coming into this game. Fabrizio Ravanelli has said he hopes that Middlesbrough can return to the Premier League and after coming so close last season, they surely can’t afford to miss out again. Their defence has been a solid base and with Daniel Ayala back in the team alongside young Ben Gibson, they rarely look like conceding more than a goal a game.
Despite missing a chunk of 2016, Ayala has made the Championship team of the year alongside team mates George Friend, Grant Leadbitter and Adam Clayton. Aitor Karanka has asked for the Riverside to be rocking ahead of this match and there’s no doubt it will be an intimidating atmosphere if the fans can get behind their players.
Ipswich
It’s been a poor few weeks for Ipswich who appear to have already broken up for their summer holidays. It’s no win in six now and just three points taken from their last four away matches. In theory, they can be pleased with their season, although missing out on the play-offs will hurt Big Mick and the Ipswich fans. There have been rumblings of discontent around Portman Road with many fans claiming Mick’s formations are a little too cautious. They’ll be hoping his side attack Middlesbrough from the off.
There’s clearly a goalscoring problem, with just three goals in six games and it could be a quieter evening for Ayala and Gibson at the back. His season may not have been prolific, but they are significantly weaker without Daryl Murphy in the side. The striker has been absent since the end of March after picking up an injury on International Duty. It took 71 minutes for Ipswich to produce a shot on goal on Tuesday night against Fulham and they simply must to do better than that to get anything here.
Middlesbrough vs Ipswich Team News
There are a couple of injury worries for Middlesbrough going into this game. The biggest concern is the fitness of left-back George Friend, who has had another wonderfully consistent season. However, ‘Gorgeous George’ as the Middlesbrough fans have nicknamed him is struggling with a hamstring problem which was picked up at Turf Moor. Gaston Ramirez is another possible absentee for this one, he picked up a calf injury. With big games to come, Karanka may decide to rest the duo and hope they are back in time for next Friday’s clash at Birmingham. Christian Stuani is back and available for this match.
For the visitors, Daryl Murphy remains on the sidelines and isn’t being rushed back. Mick McCarthy said he didn’t want the striker to miss out on Euro 2016 by coming back early from his lay-off. Luke Varney is still suffering with a knee injury and won’t be back for this and joins Giles Coke on the sidelines. McCarthy has said he may give a game to a few of the younger players. Andre Dozzell was a starter on Tuesday night whilst Teddy Bishop could return. Ben Pringle couldn’t play on Tuesday, but is likely to feature here.
Middlesbrough vs Ipswich Predictions
Middlesbrough are becoming far too short to back when they are at the Riverside. But with Ipswich’s wretched recent form and the possibility that McCarthy may throw younger players into the mix, I think Middlesbrough on the handicap is a good bet. My first Middlesbrough v Ipswich prediction is for Middlesbrough -1 on the Asian Handicap.
MIDDLESBROUGH (-1 ASIAN HANDICAP) – 8/11 with 888Sport
Although Middlesbrough have been conceding recently, Ipswich just aren’t scoring enough and with Murphy still missing, I don’t fancy them to get on the scoresheet. My second Middlesbrough v Ipswich betting tip is for Both Teams to Score? No.
BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE NO – 4/6 with Coral.
I simply cannot look past the man in-form Jordan Rhodes for my anytime goalscorer tip this weekend. He now has three in two games and could find the Ipswich backline generous. My third Middlesbrough v Ipswich betting tip this weekend is for Jordan Rhodes to score anytime.
RHODES TO SCORE ANYTIME – 11/10 with William Hill.
