Over in Huddersfield, Chris Powell has been dispensed with after just three wins all season and the fans getting restless over his supposed ‘boring’ football. It’s a shame for Powell, who is widely regarded as one of the game’s nice guys, but Huddersfield fans want more and the criteria for the new man in charge is to excite the fans and play the sort of football that gets people on their feet. A tough task given the budget at the club. The new man who will be looking to meet those expectations is David Wagner, who has left his role at Borussia Dortmund II to relocate to West Yorkshire. Dean Hoyle admits there is an element of risk about this appointment, but it will be seen as a masterstroke if he pulls it off. Wagner was rumoured to joining Jurgen Klopp’s coaching staff, but has opted to be the main man at Huddersfield instead.
Leeds got their first maximum point haul under Steve Evans in midweek as they beat goal-shy Cardiff by a single goal. It was stunner by Alex Mowatt, which won them the game and it might just turn things around the beleaguered Elland Road outfit, who were struggling to pick up points at home.
It’s been a long time coming and it will be relief for Evans as he looks to win over the fans. He was always going to be a marmite appointment, but a win here and any reservations might be forgotten for a few weeks, at least.
Despite Leeds’ recent scoring troubles and their penchant for games going under 2.5 goals, I think both teams will find the net here. Wagner is likely to be finding his feet and test a number of players out with many of them looking to impress the new man at the helm. Leeds should score more goals given the creativity they possess going forward and I think they can find a gap in the Huddersfield defence, which has only kept two clean sheets all season.
