Football Accumulator Tips this Week

Crystal Palace to beat Aston Villa

Villa toiled to a draw with League Two Wycombe in midweek and will have to face a replay in an already congested fixture zone. Remi Garde is still without a win as manager and it’s hard to see them getting it here against away specialists Crystal Palace. The Eagles were without a win in three in the league, but they dispatched of indifferent Southampton on Saturday and they haven’t been defeated on the road since running into Leicester on the 24th of October. Just two defeats away from Selhurst Park show a clear preference to away fixtures and an impressive 2-1 win over Stoke at the Britannia is the pick of the recent bunch. Villa have picked up just three points all season at home and the majority of the Villa faithful are planning for life in the Championship. Even the eternal optimists in Claret and Blue must be beginning to have a few niggling doubts.

Nottingham Forest to beat Birmingham

The bare stats will tell you that Birmingham have one of the best away records in the league, but that has dissipated recently and they haven’t been victorious in any of their last four matches away from St Andrews. There has been a real change in the Blues’ form – two months ago, they were poor at home, terrific on the road. Now, they are winless in four away and have won their last three consecutive matches in front of their own fans. Forest trail their opponents by eight points, but they are a side in-form and another victory in the FA Cup over QPR can only inspire further confidence. They’ve picked up 10 points from a possible 12 in their last four home matches – only dropping points against in-form Leeds. The Tricky Trees last lost here on the 3rd of October against Hull City and they’ve been very pleasing to watch. Another three points beckons here.

Sheffield Wednesday to beat Bolton

A short one, but it should be added to the Tuesday night accumulator tip. Sheffield Wednesday beat Fulham at the weekend and they should be able to get the better of the beleaguered Trotters. Wednesday have been brilliant at home all season and just a single defeat at Hillsborough is testament to that. Middlesbrough were the only side to come here and snatch maximum points and the Teessiders are very difficult to beat. ‘Difficult to beat’ is not an accusation that can be levelled at Bolton this season. It’s been a campaign to forget for the Trotters and it could get worse with the sale of key players. Neil Lennon needs all the help he can get, but his clubs finances are in no sort of shape to hold onto important squad members. They were hit for four by Rotherham on their last away outing and they clung onto their place in the FA Cup late on against National League side Eastleigh at the weekend.

Wolves to beat Fulham

Kenny Jackett’s place in the Wolves dugout was very much in jeopardy, but he’s saved it in spectacular style with three wins on the bounce. He has lost top scorer Benik Afobe to Premier League new boys Bournemouth, but he will be hoping the fee is reinvested in his squad. He has tightened things up at the back and it’s now three consecutive clean sheets in a row for the men in gold. Fulham took an age to appoint a new manager, eventually settling on former Watford boss Slavisa Jokanovic and he didn’t get off to the best of starts. A 2-1 away loss at Sheffield Wednesday in the cup makes it two defeats in two to the Owls and he will be looking to turn things around in the Black Country. The Cottagers are not good travellers and have picked up just a single point from their last three away matches – that was to rock-bottom Bolton. With Wolves’ new found confidence, I would back them to take all of the spoils here.

Wigan to beat Sheffield United

Anybody who spent Thursday night watching Wigan beat Gillingham will have enjoyed themselves. It was a great advert for League One football and the Latics certainly showed their promotion credentials with a tremendous comeback. They also had chances in the 1st half and can probably consider themselves unlucky to be two behind at the break. A 96th minute winner from Craig Morgan will give Gary Caldwell’s side tremendous confidence going into this one. They have a few home games to catch up on and they’ve still only conceded seven goals here at the DW. They also have the benefit of a couple of days’ extra rest over their opponents Sheffield United. The Blades were desperately unlucky not to have taken Manchester United to a replay and they may be feeling wounded by that injustice. I still worry about their away form though and they lost at Bramall Lane last time out to Peterborough. I think Wigan can make it a fifth game unbeaten.
