Football Accumulator Tips 13th Jan 2017
Go Ahead Eagles v AZ Alkmaar – AZ win
We start with a predicted away win in the first Eredivisie game of 2017. It’s good to welcome back Holland’s top flight after the winter break, but Go Ahead Eagles ended 2016 miserably and I can’t see it getting any better this year. First of all, they’ve lost their only other Friday night game this season and haven’t won on a Friday since August 2014. Second of all, they have the third worst form in the league and have slumped to back to back defeats in their last couple home matches. They have scored just 5 goals in 9 matches and clearly don’t have enough firepower in the side. They did beat Feyenoord here back on the 6th of November, which is a slightly worrying result, but it’s been all downhill since then. AZ are unbeaten in four away matches in the Eredivisie and they’ve beaten sides in and around the Eagles. They’ve beaten ADO Den Haag and saw off FC Twente just before Christmas. They could only draw at Excelsior, but the hosts have picked up and started scoring goals and are actually three unbeaten at home despite their lowly position. AZ scored 10 goals in their last 4 matches and should be too strong for a low-scoring Go Ahead Eagles.
Leeds v Derby – Leeds win
Leeds had an excellent end to 2016 under Garry Monk and it’s set to continue this year. Pablo Hernandez put pen to paper this week which is a huge boost and the club go from strength to strength under the former Swansea boss. Their home record is fantastic with four consecutive wins and four consecutive clean sheets. They came from a goal behind to beat Cambridge on Monday in the FA Cup and confidence is high in the camp. Derby have been a revelation under Steve McClaren and they’ve dramatically improved since his arrival. They’ve started to score goals and have added David Nugent to their ranks – he’s prolific at this level. Their away record isn’t bad with 5/12 victories, but they’ve failed to collect maximum points on their travels since a 1-0 in mid-December against QPR which needed a penalty to break the R’s resistance. Derby won 1-0 at the IPRO earlier in the season and Leeds will be looking for revenge.
Lommel United v KSV Roeselare – Roeselare win
The Belgian second tier didn’t take a break for winter but Lommel United probably wish it had! The hosts have been awful in recent weeks and crashed to a 5-1 defeat against Lierse on Sunday night. They’d beaten Lierse away from home back in October during a brief resurgence, but they’ve since lapsed into old habits and are far too open. That victory sent Lierse to the summit, knocking Roeselare off the top and they’ll be determined to reclaim their position on Friday night. They slipped up in their last away game against 3rd placed Antwerp, but this should be much easier. They’ve won four of the last five games, but have conceded in each, so don’t be surprised if Lommel do find the net at some stage. Lommel are conceding on average two goals a game, but they’ve recently let in 9 goals in their last two games. Roeselare should have too much firepower for the bottom side.
Arouca v Estoril – Arouca win
This match from Portugal’s top flight is likely to be low scoring, but I’m backing Arouca to edge it. Estoril are working under a new coach Pedro Gomez Carmona but the new gaffer has failed to change much so far. His side are definitely better at the back, but they haven’t found the net under his regime and are lacking adventure and creativity in the final third. Arouca have lost their last two home games, but I don’t think that’s a fair reflection – They were more than a match for Rio Ave before a 75th minute dismissal for the hosts. They held on for another 14 minutes, but the visitors eventually broke the deadlock with minutes to spare. An 80th minute gave Guimaraes all three points just before Christmas, but Arouca performed well against the in-form side and could have taken a point. Jorginho is in terrific form and scored in last week’s fantastic 2-1 win at Tondela. They hit four at Moreirense the week before. They should have too much for Estoril.
Troyes v AC Ajaccio – Troyes win
Troyes have been magnificent at home recently. They’ve won four of their last five here and only a 1-1 draw with improving Auxerre has prevented it from being a full house. They take on AC Ajaccio, who put up a good fight against Monaco in the Coupe De France, but were eliminated. They had previously been battered 4-1 by GFC Ajaccio and will be looking to bounce back from that embarrassment. They don’t score enough on their travels with just five strikes in ten games and Troyes have conceded just once in their last five home games. AC Ajaccio’s best hope is to sneak a 1-1 draw, but they lack firepower on their travels and if Troyes grab a couple, it’s likely to be game over.
