England vs Russia Predictions
England finished their preparations for the tournament with a narrow 1-0 win against Portugal. They weren’t helped by a Bruno Alves dismissal in the first half which changed the dynamic of the game. They went through qualifying unbeaten and should be confident of reaching the latter stages of the competition. Slovakia and Wales await, but Russia will be the first obstacle that Roy Hodgson’s men need to overcome.
Russia are undergoing a wobbly period. Their defence is ageing with a combined age of 64 in the center back positions, but their attack is youthful and bright. Their problem is largely in midfield with two major absentees – Dzagoev and Denisov, who will miss the tournament through injury. They have been able to call up replacements with Artur Yusupov a decent option as a back-up, but their weaknesses will be exposed with the wounded pair on the sidelines.
Leonid Slutski has been juggling responsibilities of managing both CSKA and the National Team after the disappointment of the Fabio Capello reign. He has been faithful to a number of CSKA players with a large proportion of Zenit representatives thrown in too. Smolov and Dzyuba make a very dangerous front two and supported by Kokorin, they will be regularly attacking the England goal, but they can be exploited at the other end of the pitch.
With Dzagoev and Denisov absent, the defence is very exposed and England can use their pace to devastating effect. It’s just one win in five games for the Russians and confidence isn’t particularly high – especially after surrendering the lead to Czech Republic in a recent friendly. Ignashevic and Berezutski aren’t getting any younger and can be caught out for pace whilst Smolnikov is very attack minded and is often found further up the pitch than Slutski would like.
Get 3/1 for Vardy, Rooney or Kane to score when you open a Betfair account.
England are looking in decent shape. Vardy, Kane and Rooney could all start, but need to be arranged in the correct formation. Roy Hodgson favours the diamond, but against Portugal it left Deli Alli isolated at times and primarily a passenger. Alli can be devastating and is a weapon which should be utilised. He will cause Ignashevic and Berezutski endless problems.
Harry Kane is expected to carry the goalscoring burden for England and is likely to be one of the first names on the teamsheet. There are still a couple of doubts over the England defence, but Chris Smalling is reasonably reliable and netted the winner against Portugal. Gary Cahill and John Stones are two other options, both have had inconsistent seasons, but Stones might be more effective playing without Roberto Martinez tactics. There’s plenty of width in the full back areas with Nathaniel Clyne, Kyle Walker and Danny Rose hardly short of pace and not afraid to get forward.

Russia will offer a threat, but I think it can be largely nullified by England. If Roy Hodgson starts with a positive formation and mindset, they can find spaces amongst the Russian back-line and kill this game off. England have the firepower to get off to a winning start and I believe they can pick up three points here. My first England v Russia betting tip is for England to win. They can be backed at 10/11 with Ladbrokes or if you open a new Paddy Power account you’ll get 6/1 for England to win.
Many still have their reservations about the England defence and with Dzyuba and Smolov is decent form at the end of the Russian Premier League season, they could easily get on the scoresheet here. My second England vs Russia prediction is for Both Teams to Score? Yes. It can be backed at 6/5 with Bet365.

Harry Kane is almost certain to command a starting place. There are doubts over whether Vardy will be deployed from the off or from the bench and it seems likely the Spurs man will be the focal point of the England attack. My third England vs Russia betting tip for Saturday’s Euro 2016 fixture is for Harry Kane to score anytime. He is 6/4 with William Hill to find the net in 90 minutes.
