Derby v Newcastle Preview
Derby
Nigel Pearson this week claimed that Derby needed ‘freshening up’ and he was reasonably busy in the transfer window. Out went Chris Martin and Jeff Hendrick, the latter had been subject to bids all summer before eventually departing for Premier League Burnley whilst the former joined Fulham. Goalkeeper Lee Grant also left on loan.
In came Ikechi Anya from Watford and he was joined by teammate Matej Vydra who will be relied upon to put right the lack of goals in this Derby side. James Wilson, who joined on loan earlier is also going to provide something different up top.
The Rams have been keeping clean sheets, but haven’t been able to do anything in the final third. It’s been hugely frustrating for the fans who have seen their club pay good money for attacking talent and not reaped the rewards.
Striker Darren Bent has warned Newcastle and their Championship rivals that they will ‘turn the corner’ sooner rather than later. They have only collected five points from a possible five and the recent defeat to local rivals Burton Albion was a particularly difficult and bitter pill to swallow.
Bent himself has been guilty of spurning opportunities, but with fresh blood in the side, it could revitalise the side who reached the play-offs last season.
Some fans have questioned the logic of letting Chris Martin leave. He is a fans favourite and has offered more than the likes of Nick Blackman, but Pearson has made the decision and he’ll have to stick by it.
A slow start isn’t the end of the world and there is plenty of time to put it right, but they can’t afford to lose too much ground on their Championship rivals at the top of the pile.
All of the new signings are available for this fixture and will be looking to make an immediate impression in front of their new fans and the TV cameras.
Newcastle
It was a tricky start for Newcastle as they adjusted to life in the Championship, but they’ve hit their stride and got going. Rafa Benitez has been forced to change the mentality of the squad and a large number of the personnel.
On Deadline Day, most of the stories surrounded the future of Moussa Sissoko, who eventually chose Spurs as his destination of choice. In the other way came Daryl Murphy. It was a relatively low-key signing, but it could be a very important one with plenty of experience at this level.
Murphy hasn’t been as prolific this season, but he’s proved in the past, he can be a 20 goal striker and if provided with the service, he could fire Newcastle upwards.
Murphy will have to battle it out with Dwight Gayle and Mitrovic for a place in the starting 11 against Derby.
A lot of Newcastle’s other business was conducted before DD and Mo Diame, Isaac Hayden and Matt Ritchie all seem to have settled.
After an uncertain start, even captain Jamaal Lascelles has improved and looks more composed under pressure at the back.
Toon fans have been buoyed by the fact that goalkeeper Rob Elliott has signed a new contract this week.
The Magpies have conceded just one goal in three games, which is a huge improvement and they even kept Brighton at bay last time out. They beat Bristol City at Ashton Gate a couple of weeks ago and have shown they can be professional when they need to.
There are still a number of players settling in and with Rafa ringing the changes, it’s been tough for Newcastle to find consistency, but they might just be working their way into top gear now.
Derby vs Newcastle Predictions
Pearson may have freshened things up, but I think the visit of Newcastle is the last thing he will want. The Toon have just hit form and put in a professional display in their last away outing. I can’t see the home side collecting all three points here so my first Derby vs Newcastle betting tip is Newcastle to win (draw no bet) at odds of 5/6 with Betfred.
Over/Under 2.5 Goals
Derby have been keeping sides out and they drew 0-0 with Aston Villa in this timeslot a few weeks back. They’ve been having problems scoring. But Newcastle have shipped just a single goal in the last three games and have looked to organised their backline so the best option could be to go with under 2.5 goals for our next football tip this weekend – the odds are 4/6 with bet365.
Anytime Goalscorer
Plenty of goalscorers to choose from, but I don’t think we’ll see too many of them on the scoresheet. At a slightly bigger price, it’s always worth taking a chance on Matt Ritchie and he’s our final Derby vs Newcastle betting tip. The midfielder has already endeared himself to his new fans with his performances so far and is never far away from a free-kick and/or a wonder goal.
