Charlton v Middlesbrough betting tips, predictions and preview for Sunday afternoon’s live TV Championship fixture including a team to win prediction.
It’s off to the Valley as Charlton attempt to climb out of the relegation zone when they host inconsistent Middlesbrough. We have the best bets for the Sunday afternoon kick off.
Charlton v Middlesbrough Predictions
It’s two unbeaten for Charlton now – a sentence not often heard around South London this season, but they’ve picked up four points from a possible six against MK Dons and Brentford.
Jose Riga has tightened things up at the back and they’ve started looking more of a threat going forward. The Belgium boss is still a bit of an enigma and often stays at the helm for no longer than a matter of months, but there’s no denying he has an impact during his short term appointments.
They weren’t able to sneak past MK Dons in midweek though and there is still a seven-point gap between the two sides. The Dons are currently occupying the final safe position in the league, a berth that the Addicks are eyeing up.
There’s been far too much focus on the off the field antics at the club though and it looks like they’ve paid the price. They have some good youngsters coming through and Callum Harriott’s double against Brentford is testament to that. Unfortunately, the recruitment has been haphazard and inconsistent and quite frankly not good enough.
Speaking of recruitment, Middlesbrough purchased striker Jordan Rhodes for £9m in January, but there seems to be an ongoing feud between Aitor Karanka and the fans about the lack of appearances for their marquee signing. Rhodes was left on the bench again against Rotherham in midweek with Boro slipping to another disappointing defeat. As Burnley have proved, if you have a striker who scores goals and you’ve paid a substantial fee for his services, then he should start (Andre Gray).
Burnley are reaping the rewards of having a Vokes-Gray partnership and have previously enjoyed a Vokes-Ings partnership and whilst a front two isn’t for everyone, it is perhaps time Karanka gave it a go.
Fans are getting a little nervy on Teesside and they want to see David Nugent and Jordan Rhodes start together up front in the Middlesbrough starting line-up. They have enough service behind them to prosper, but the boss prefers a lone front man.
That defeat at the New York Stadium was there second consecutive away defeat and they’ll be desperate not to make it a hat-trick here.
Charlton have conceded 66 goals this season and are the second lowest scorers in the division, so that should give hope to Middlesbrough fans. But, like Rotherham, they are scrapping for their lives at the bottom and that makes things a little trickier.
Charlton have lost two and drawn two of their last four homes matches but they’ve only been defeated by a single goal. I think this will be tight, but I think the away side will prevail by a single goal. My first Charlton v Middlesbrough prediction is for Middlesbrough to win. They can be backed at 4/6 with Betfred.

Riga immediately came in and tinkered with the backline and prevented it being quite so porous. There were signs of it creeping back in during the recent 3-4 defeat to Reading, but they’ve kept two 0-0 draws here recently. Middlesbrough haven’t been scoring enough, but they still have a decent defensive record. My second Charlton v Middlesbrough betting tip is for Under 2.5 goals. It can be backed at 4/6 with William Hill.

We don’t know whether Aitor Karanka will play Rhodes or Nugent, in fact they have such a large squad it’s hard to predict the Middlesbrough starting 11 against Charlton. Aitor likes to tinker with the personnel and is likely to make sweeping changes. Check team news before you bet, but we’ll take a chance on Gaston Ramirez for our anytime goalscorer tip this weekend, who scored twice last week against Wolves.
My third Charlton v Middlesbrough betting tip is for Gaston Ramirez to score anytime. He is 11/4 with Bet365.
