There are a wealth of options in the goalscoring markets across the Football League. We’ve picked out a few possibilities from an increasingly competitive second tier for a 2016/17 Championship top goalscorer betting tip.
As always with ante-post football bets, you have a long wait to collect your winnings but a Championship top goalscorer bet keeps you interested in the league all season and is a great option for a big odds selection.
Championship Top Goalscorer Possibilities
As expected Newcastle players dominate the top end of the market. Dwight Gayle (8/1 bet365), recruited from Crystal Palace over the summer leads the way at a single figure price. He has the firepower and will surely receive the supply throughout the campaign, but I’m always reluctant to back any player below 10/1 for a season-long bet.
He’s scored at this level before and I’d rather have my money riding on him than counterpart Aleksandar Mitrovic (16/1 bet365), who is very unpredictable and is prone to accumulating suspensions.
Further down the list, Britt Assombalonga (20/1 Betfred) is back from a season-ending knee injury and could be a real contender this season. We know little about manager Phillipe Montanier at this level though and if he struggles in his first season in charge, the goals could dry up for the entire Forest side. The same applies for Nouah Dicko (50/1 Sky Bet). The Wolves striker is a livewire and will be looking to make up for lost time after a non-existent 2015/16. He’ll need to hit the ground running though and with the incoming Walter Zenga only having a matter of days to assemble his squad, will Dicko be able to start as he means to go on?
Chris Martin (25/1 bet365) didn’t reach the standards required last season whilst I’m a big Fernando Forestieri (25/1 bet365) fan, but he’s also a creator and that may prevent him topping the charts. Especially with Gary Hooper (33/1 Coral) and Stephen Fletcher (40/1 bet365) in the side, two very accomplished finishers.
Daryl Murphy (60/1 Coral) had a disappointing season last campaign and I don’t think Ipswich will be on the fringes of the play-offs and with the uncertainty over Ross Mcormack’s future, I can’t be backing the Fulham striker either.
It’s each way 4 places ¼ odds, so I’m going to take four selections from the field for my main Championship predictions from the top goalscorer market for the 2016/17 season.
Championship Top Goalscorer Betting Tips
Scott Hogan – Brentford
I think Brentford could have a decent season in the top half of the table and manager Dean Smith specialises in bringing out the best in players. Former Rochdale man Scott Hogan returned from injury towards the end of last season and got straight back on the scoresheet. He hit seven goals in seven appearances and should be able to build on that this coming campaign. Alan Judge returns to the side and should provide plenty of ammunition as should the addition of Romaine Sawyers. If the Salford born poacher can stay clear of injuries, I think he is good value at 25/1.
BETING TIP: Scott Hogan Championship Top Goalscorer – 25/1 Bet365.
Glenn Murray – Brighton
Brighton were extremely unlucky last season and just ran out of gas during the play-offs. They will be looking to bounce back this time around and Chris Hughton will have used the summer to pick his players up. Not many additions have come through the doors of the AMEX Stadium, but Glenn Murray is back and should be ready to fire the Seagulls to the top six once again. Murray always seems to be in the right place at the right time and with the amount of chances Brighton created last season, he should be a regular name on the scoresheet.
BETTING TIP: Glenn Murray Championship Top Goalscorer – 25/1 Betfred.
Jonathon Kodija – Bristol City
In my pre-season Championship predictions, I’ve said that Bristol City could surprise a few people this season. They certainly could find themselves in the top half of the table fairly regularly. Lee Tomlin and Adam Matthews are back with the former signing permanently and the experience of Gary O’Neill added to the middle of the park.
The difference between them and their fellow strugglers last season was their goals. Jonathon Kodjia helped fire them away from any such trouble and I think we could see a familiar pattern once more. The Frenchman scored 19 goals last season and should be able to build upon that this campaign. A season in English football will have helped him settle and he should fly once again.
BETTING TIP: Jonathon Kodjia Championship Top Goalscorer – 25/1 Ladbrokes.
Tom Bradshaw – Barnsley
And finally…at a much larger price – Tom Bradshaw. Barnsley snapped up the Walsall man this summer and although many are tipping the Tykes to fall back down to League One, I fancy Bradshaw to impress many. The Welshman is a talented player and if he can stay injury free, he is a force to be reckoned with. He’s been firing them in during pre-season, but he can score all types of goals.
Some of his finishing in League One was mightily impressive and Barnsley were a very offensive team under Paul Heckingbottom and should continue playing that style.
BETTING TIP: Tom Bradshaw Championship Top Goalscorer – 66/1 Coral.
