It’s fair to say that Cardiff fans weren’t happy about Russell Slade last season. The former Leyton Orient man had done a terrific job in East London with his side built on a foundation of hard work and team spirit with Slade himself living only a stone’s throw from the ground.
He struggled in South Wales at first, with Cardiff hovering around midtable and being a model of inconsistency throughout his first few months in charge. He’s had chance to shape his own side this season and they’ve added much more consistency to their game and they’ve become incredibly difficult to beat.
Middlesbrough found that out on Tuesday night as they struggled to create any proper chances and inevitably, the height that the home side possess paid dividends as George Friend put through his own net late on.
The Bluebirds’ form going into tonight’s match show they are unbeaten in their last four and haven’t tasted defeat at home since the 16th September. They’ve won four of their six at the Cardiff City Stadium and have only conceded four goals in the process, two of those in one game against Hull City.
It’s set up to be a difficult challenge ahead for Bristol City, who tasted another defeat in midweek, although they had held leaders Brighton for the majority of the 90 minutes. There’s no denying that The Robins are improving under Steve Cotterill and their 2-0 win at home to Forest highlights that.
It was a decent squad which helped them achieve promotion and apart from the omission of Jay Emmanuel Thomas and the addition of the pacey Jonathon Kodjia, it’s a largely similar looking team.
Aaron Wilbraham was the hero when they put two past Dougie Freedman’s side and although the former Norwich man isn’t getting any younger, it’s these types of players that are required in the Championship. He possesses know-how and experience to pass onto his younger counterparts.
Despite a number of injuries, Cardiff have looked solid at the back and it’s a surprise to see Matt Connolly back in the side, but he has had a positive effect.
I can’t overlook the Bluebirds for another home win here in today’s football betting tips. They had to work hard for all three points on Tuesday and they may have to do similar here, but I think they can achieve that.

The Cardiff fans seem happy with Russell Slade for now and they are definitely pleased to see fewer long ball tactics than last season. One thing they could do with is more goals. Despite having such a good home record, they still only average just over a goal a game. Kenwyne Jones hasn’t quite hit the ground running with Joe Mason taking the goalscoring burden this campaign. I think it could be another narrow win the home side.
