Although very few of us within the European footballing community ever really expected Iceland to make a name for themselves across the Euro 2016 qualifying stages this season, Lars Lagerback’s boys have nonetheless achieved the seemingly impossible by guaranteeing a place at the competition next summer.

 

The likes of Eidur Gudjohnsen, Hermann Hreidarsson and Brynjar Gunnarsson have all represented their nation with varying degrees of success in the past. Despite each of the aforementioned Icelandic stars successfully carving out a decent career for themselves among the English game however, doing the business on the international scene nonetheless proved a task much easier said than done for each respective player.

 

So then, in light of their nation’s first ever qualification for a major international tournament, this particular Euro 2016 preview aims to evaluate just how well Iceland will turn out at the finals in France, and whether or not they will actually impress on the international scene when the domestic campaign finally reaches its end…

 

Well, as Lagerback’s team (currently being co-managed by previous assistant coach, Heimir Hallgrimsson) did in-fact hold down top-spot in Group A for quite a sustained period of time this season, perhaps the rest of us should now take note of Iceland’s undoubted good form, and potentially give them a greater shout at Euro 2016 than initial appearances would have first made out.

 

Euro 2016 betting tips could hold this team in fairly high regard next summer, especially as Iceland only just lost out on first place in the end by a meagre two points. Yes, his team may admittedly include very few top class names we’ve all failed to become accustomed with over the last few years of so, but that does not mean the Swedish tactician doesn’t currently reside over a squad brimming with confidence and a fair amount of priceless team spirit to boot.

 

Iceland eventually conceded the fewest amount of goals in Group A thanks to some truly resolute defending at the back – yet with the likes of Kolbeinn Sigborsson and Alfred Finnbogason potentially in place to do the business up top for their side as well – relevant Euro 2016 predictions could easily shine this team within a truly promising light once the tournament finally comes around next summer.

 

But whilst Cardiff City’s Aron Gunnarsson may well hold the most important role within Lagerback’s current squad as the undisputed captain of his country, Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson simply must arrive as the most dangerous attacking threat among all the Iceland players. This is someone who clearly knows how to assist, create and score some pretty well taken goals when the chances present themselves time and time again…

 

The Liberty Stadium faithful have being enjoying the services of Sigurdsson on and off for a good few seasons now. If the Premier League favourite can stay fit for his nation, Iceland will certainly have a truly exciting star on board to complement the rest of the admirable assets currently available for selection.

 

In the end then, this Iceland team might not be all that famous within the grand scheme of things. Lagerback may not be the most renowned coach on the international scene, and most football fans ultimately wouldn’t give his side much of a chance at Euro 2016 next summer in the cold light of day.

 

But if Iceland can nevertheless continue in this current vein of rich form they seemed to have struck upon so successfully this season – you never know – this side could really cause a few upsets in France next year with just a little bit of good fortune on their side, and a fair amount of somewhat undervalued talent on board to match.
