Bristol City v Sheffield Wednesday predictions and betting tips for this weekend’s Championship fixture on Saturday 9th April 2016 kicking off at 3pm.
There’s a number of clashes which affect the top and bottom of the Championship table. This is one of them and we’ve picked out the best bets. Sheffield Wednesday are on an unbeaten run and are looking to continue that fine form as they visit the West Country to face Bristol City.
Betting Preview: Bristol City v Sheffield Wednesday
Sheffield Wednesday
It’s been a very good first season in charge for Ricardo Carvalhal, the wily Portuguese coach has spent wisely and lifted Sheffield Wednesday into the play-offs. They’ve overcome a shaky patch and are now on a five game unbeaten run, winning four of those. They have some very talented players and the signings of Fernando Forestieri and Barry Bannan have proved very effective.
Not only have they picked up results throughout the season, they’ve played a terrific brand of entertaining football which has kept the crowds enthralled all season. Carvalhal has blended together some exciting prospects for the future and Championship veterans as they attempt to clamber their way into the Premier League. Should they find themselves in the end of the season shake up, nobody will relish having to face them, particularly at Hillsborough. For all the talk of silky football, Wednesday had to win ugly on Tuesday as they came from behind to see off 10-men Blackburn Rovers courtesy of a Ross Wallace winner.
It was a positive result against a side who are typically hard to break down and it showed that the players have the appetite for the battle. Carvalhal has even earned praise from one time Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock who described him as ‘my kind of manager’. Whatever you think of Warnock and his antics, he doesn’t often praise fellow managers and there is evidently some truth in the fact the players enjoy working under Carvalhal and are responding to his demands.
Bristol City
Bristol City stand in the way on Saturday and the Robins have been working well under their new boss Lee Johnson. The former Barnsley boss’ stock has been rising over the past few years and he has improved Bristol City as an attacking unit. There is still work to be done defensively as they shipped four to Hull, but they can be devastating in the final third as they demonstrated against Bolton, hitting the beleaguered Trotters for six.
Unlike Carvalhal, Johnson felt the wrath of Warnock on Tuesday as the Rotherham boss blasted him for his pre-match notes and said he was just like his father (Gary Johnson, whom Warnock has various spats with).
It was an important point for Bristol City, who stopped the Millers from moving away from the relegation pack and with MK Dons slipping up, they can breathe a little easier for now. With Fulham showing significant improvement, Johnson needs a few more wins to drag his side clear and secure Championship status.
Team News
Johnson is likely to keep the same squad that held Rotherham to a 1-1 draw after going behind to a Matt Darbyshire goal. Korey Smith made a surprise return in midfield and is likely to keep his place after playing 90 minutes. Up front, it’s any two from three. Peter Odemwingie scored the equaliser and is likely to get the nod to play alongside Jonathon Kodjia although there’s always the possibility Aaron Wilbraham could be drafted in.
There’s likely to be a few more alterations for Wednesday, who are waiting on captain Glen Loovens. The commanding Centre back aggravated his injury against Blackburn and it could see a return for Michael Turner in the squad. Tom Lees will continue at the back after a string of impressive performances. Sam Hutchinson is still absent whilst Barry Bannan made his return from suspension on Tuesday and is likely to maintain his position in the team.
Bristol City v Sheffield Wednesday Predictions
It’s a tough one to call for my Championship betting tips as both teams are looking in decent nick. But Bristol City’s recent defeats have been against teams at the top and they were thumped by Hull and Brighton and slipped up against Cardiff. It’s got to be a Wednesday win. My first selection is for Sheffield Wednesday to win. They can be backed at 13/8 with Sportingbet.
There’s bound to be a few goals in this one. Bristol City enjoy pouring forward and with loan signings such as Lee Tomlin and Peter Odemwingie, they are always going to threaten. Wednesday hit three against Charlton and Forest recently and there’s definitely going to be plenty of opportunities for them to strike in this one. My second Bristol City v Sheffield Wednesday prediction is for Over 2.5 goals. It can be backed at 23/20 with Betfair.
Take your pick from various goalscorers in this one. I’m opting for Lucas Joao, who has hit the net six times this season and is always a threat. My third Bristol City v Sheff Wednesday prediction is for Lucas Joao to score anytime. He can be backed at 5/2 with Coral.
