Championship Betting Tips for Boxing Day
Reading v Norwich Tip – Reading win
Reading have looked extremely organised under Jaap Stam this season. They weren’t expected to venture much further than mid-table under the Dutchman’s tutelage, but they’ve exceeded expectations so far and are looking to make it 5 consecutive victories at the Majeski against Norwich. The Royals have beaten Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield, Bristol City and Nottingham Forest amongst others here this season and Norwich could be their next victim. Only Aston Villa have taken maximum points home form Berkshire this season. Alex Neil is under pressure at Norwich. The Scot has taken some of the weight off his shoulders, but defeat at Carrow Road to Huddersfield last weekend has thrust him back into the spotlight as their play-off charge falters on a weekly basis. They’ve won three times on the road this season – against Blackburn, Nottingham Forest and Wolves, all sides placed 17th or below. Reading currently sit 3rd.
Huddersfield v Nottingham Forest Tip – Huddersfield win
My second vote goes for the Terriers, who were Norwich’s conquerors last weekend. They’ve been boosted by the news that David Wagner has turned down offers from Germany to stay at the club and that should be news to the ears of the players who clearly enjoy working under him. They rarely trouble the top half of the Championship, but have gone into the Christmas period in 4th place on 39 points. They’ve had their blip and have bounced back in decent fashion. They won at Burton and then Norwich, neither of which are easy places to go and they should find it much easier back at home. They’ve won 7 of 10 games here, losing just twice. Sheffield Wednesday set up to nullify them perfectly whilst they were out-of-sorts when losing 2-1 to Wigan. Forest’s away form Isn’t great. They have picked up a couple of wins recently, but they have since lost Britt Assombalonga and Henri Lansbury to injury. The former may play some part here, but the latter is definitely absent until the New Year. They’ve lost 5 of their last 7 on the road.
Barnsley v Blackburn Tip – Barnsley win
Our final selection is for the Tykes as they take on Blackburn. Paul Heckingbottom has tweaked his formation lately and it seems to be paying dividends. He wasn’t happy with the 5-2 collapse to Forest here and they’ve improved remarkably since. They never gave up against Cardiff last weekend and eventually got their reward, winning 4-3 with the last kick of the game. I can’t help feel that they haven’t been getting the results they deserve at Oakwell and the 2-1 victory over Norwich was closer to the type of performance we can expect. They have netted twice in four of their last six matches here and with Blackburn’s poor defence, there’s a good chance that the same will happen again. Rovers have lost 8 times away this season and have seen their last three games (home and away) end in disappointing fashion, all finished in a 3-2 defeat. They’ve kept just a single clean sheet on the road this season, which strangely came against Newcastle. It’s hard to have too much confidence in Owen Coyle’s side.
