It was a straightforward victory in midweek for Hull as they saw off Brentford with relative ease. They face already relegated Bolton at the Macron and we’ve got the best football betting tips for the 12:30 kick off live on Sky Sports.
Bolton v Hull Preview
Bolton
It’s been a torrid season for Bolton. Relegated to League One, The Trotters were always going to be up against it once the scale of the financial problems were publicised. With Chairman Phil Gartside sadly passing away, it’s been a 12 months to forget at the Macron.
There’s still no breakthrough in the hunt for a manager next season. Chris Wilder has been linked, Phil Brown has admitted on national TV, he would be interested in the post, but it’s down to Jimmy Phillips to see out the season in the dugout. The academy director has been placed in charge with the instructions to salvage some respect from a wreck of a season. The self-professed ‘Best Coach in the Premier League’ John Carver is another name linked with the job. But the aforementioned Wilder is thought to be the first choice of Bolton executives.
This week, they’ve announced that they have appointed John Pelling as their new financial director. The former Bristol City chief executive will hope to steer them in the right direction through the summer.
Wanderers will have to offload players this summer as there are a number of high earners on the books. There are plenty of positives for next season though with the likes of Zach Clough, Kaiyne Woollery and Rob Holding emerging. Oscar Threlkeld and Niall Maher have also been given game time in recent weeks. Assuming the likes of Emile Heskey, David Wheater and Stephen Dobbie will be off in the summer, they will need to recruit some reasonably priced League One players over the summer months.
On the pitch, it’s been a miserable run of form, with just a single point taken from the last eight games. They held second bottom (and now relegated) Charlton to a 0-0 draw last Tuesday, but that’s their only clean sheet in 2016.
Hull City
Two goals and a missed penalty were the story of a low-key affair at the KC in midweek as Hull saw off Brentford comfortably. With just a couple of games to go, it leaves Steve Bruce’s side three points ahead of 5th place Derby County. Hull will be looking to host the second leg at the KC if possible, a stadium where they have conceded just 11 goals this season. The Tigers have many players who have experience of the big occasions and that could give them the edge in the play-offs.
Psychologically, they’ll need to quickly erase memories of the 4-0 thumping at the iPro Stadium earlier this year. It was a rare defensive lapse for Hull, who have been solid all season. They’ll be hoping Michael Dawson is fit again for the end of season showdown. Derby also beat them in their own backyard, but the play-offs are able to throw up any number of surprises.
They are now five unbeaten and have put their miserable run of one victory in eight behind them. After a run of seven clean sheets in eight, Brentford’s failure to score was only the second shutout in 11 for the Tigers. In their final away game of the conventional season, they’ll be hoping to take momentum into the play-offs and they couldn’t ask for better opponents. They could only find the one goal when they met in December, but they’ll be hoping to add to their 64 goals this campaign in Lancashire.
Team News
Bolton could welcome back Mark Davies back for this match. The midfielder missed the defeat to Cardiff with a knee injury, but is back in contention for this one. Gary Madine could also return to the starting eleven if he has recovered from his hip injury. This game will probably come too soon for Dorian Dervite, who is back in training. Niall Maher is suspended after his red card on Saturday.
Mohamed Diame returned for the midweek victory over Brentford and the midfielder found the back of the net in the first half. He looks set to continue in the side. Harry Maguire and Alex Bruce should continue at the back after they kept a clean sheet. Issac Hayden got a rare start on Tuesday, but the Arsenal loanee could find himself back on the bench as Steve Bruce looks to keep his large squad fresh and happy. The boss also faces a choice between Chuba Akpom and Adama Diomande, who missed from the spot in midweek.
Bolton vs Hull Predictions
There should be a few goals in this one. Hull’s last three away games have had three or more goals. Whilst only two of Bolton’s matches since the middle of February have gone under. The first Bolton vs Hull prediction is for Over 2.5 goals to be scored in the match.
OVER 2.5 GOALS – 4/5 with Betfair.
They don’t keep many clean sheets on the road, but they should have enough to prevent the bottom club from notching. Although they’ve been better at home, they’ve failed to score in two of their last three. The second Bolton v Hull Championship prediction is for Hull to win to nil.
HULL TO WIN TO NIL – 7/5 with Paddy Power.
It’s hard to know who will start for Hull, but Adama Diomande will be determined to make up for his penalty miss in midweek and he already has two goals away from home this season. The third Bolton v Hull betting tip is for Adama Diomande to score anytime.
DIOMANDE TO SCORE ANYTIME – 13/8 with Sky Bet.
