After speculation lasting most of the week, Steve Bruce was finally announced as Aston Villa manager earlier in the week. The former Hull man still lives in the Midlands and although not a glamorous choice, he seems the right fit. He has a job on his hands though with Villa fans expecting promotion back to the Premier League this season. He’s demanded hard work this week from his players saying that will be his main criteria. Roberto Di Matteo was sacked after a poor start saw the Villains drop a number of points, particularly late on in games. Bruce has fairly recently won promotion with Hull and will be looking to replicate that with at least three quarters of the season left. Wolves have been inconsistent this season, but they are always up for a local derby as they proved when they beat Birmingham 3-1 at St Andrews – nobody else has taken maximum point away this season. There are a number of players still bedding in at the club but the Injury situation is improving and Wolves fans will be glad to see the return of Nouah Dicko.

Aston Villa fans will be expecting the former Birmingham boss to turn things around straight away, but this won’t be easy. Wolves have beaten Birmingham and Newcastle away from home this season, teams who sit 3rd and 6th in the table. They are a little unpredictable though. Given the amount that Aston Villa spent of strikers this season, it’s hard to see them failing to score here. Bruce got Abel Hernandez firing at Hull and should be able to find a way to get the best out of Jonathon Kodjia. The aforementioned Nouha Dicko is hoping to play some part in this match. He came on against Norwich before netting a brace in the EFL Trophy against Crewe. It’s hard to know what team Steve Bruce is likely to play. He did say this week that ‘it’s a clean slate’ and there will be ‘Places up for grabs’. He said he ‘didn’t care about anybody’s past’ so even Gabby Agbonlahor could be in with a shout of place in the side! Unlikely though. Bruce also mentioned that he’s previously worked with Alan Hutton and looked forward to doing so again.
Ross McCormack should have shook off his injury which was troubling him prior to the International Break. Jonathon Kodjia and Rudy Gestede could be the front two here.
Walter Zenga has been prone to a huge amount of rotation this season. The likes of Carl Ikeme and Danny Batth have been in the minority so far with their regular spots in the team. The midfield has been an area of tinkering, but Prince Oniangue has shown plenty of pleasing attributes since joining the club. Dave Edwards could partner him in the middle. Up front, Ivan Cavaleiro has struggled so far and could find his place up for grabs.
As we mentioned, Nouah Dicko is back and may have to settle for a place on the bench, but will certainly get 20 minutes in this game.
