Accrington vs AFC Wimbledon betting tips and predictions for the League One play-off second leg on Wednesday 18th Mary.
A very tight game was decided by a last minute strike and it’s AFC Wimbledon who travel to Lancashire with a narrow advantage. Plymouth await the winner and we’ve got the best betting tips for the game.
Accrington Stanley vs AFC Wimbledon Preview
Accrington Stanley
John Coleman isn’t a shy individual and he isn’t averse to a rant. The scouser has been lamenting the fixtures this week stating his side should be playing on Thursday as opposed to Wednesday. Coleman should concentrate on the matter in hand though as his side are potentially 90 minutes away from Wembley. True, his side have a deficit to overcome, but it isn’t impossible against a back drop of noise at the Wham Stadium.
The boss wasn’t happy that his side returned home on Sunday morning at 3am and have to play again on Wednesday night. To me, that doesn’t seem too much of an ask. AFC Wimbledon will have got home earlier, but they will be spending Wednesday travelling, whilst Accrington can train ahead of the big match. The first leg was attritional. Not laced with chances and opportunities, but an absorbing game nonetheless.
Accrington haven’t managed to get the better of their opponents in their last four meetings now and that’s a worry for Stanley fans. AFC Wimbledon are not the most fashionable of sides, they don’t play scintillating football, but they are mighty effective and they know how to rough Accrington up.
Compared to the deficits we’ve seen across the leagues, 1-0 is overturn-able (Not officially a word) and Accrington’s Tom Davies believes his side can book their place at Wembley in front of their own fans. The manner of the late goal being conceded is bound to hurt, but Coleman needs to pick his side up and inspire them to give their all.
Tarique-Fosu hit the post for Accrington and Shay McCartan tested the goalkeeper as Stanley pushed for a winner at Kingsmeadow and although goals have eluded them in their last two games, they’ll keep the Wimbledon defence busy. Stanley have only conceded a single goal in four matches and just five since the 19th of March. They are solid at the back and Davies has been a huge part of the watertight back four. Many people will be rooting for Accrington this Wednesday night. Another underdog story in a season of heart-warming tales would be welcomed by many.
AFC Wimbledon
It would also be a huge story if AFC Wimbledon were to progress to League One. Neal Ardley’s side have become difficult to beat and showed their strength once again in West London on Saturday night. Similar to their opponents, they pride themselves on a very stingy backline. They’ve conceded just five goals at home since the start of February, so it was always going to be difficult for Accrington to find a way past. They’ve also conceded just a single goal in their last four home matches.
Akinfenwa was the difference here, he came on and roughed up the Accrington backline. The ‘Beast’ came on and promptly rattled the woodwork. He also laid on the winning goal and Ardley will want to deploy the striker to good effect once again. The powerful frontman has demanded his team add a ‘fairytale finish’ to their season. He has said it would be mean everything to reach Wembley this season. He has also praised the ethos of the squad and believes they have enough about them to go all the way.
Akinfenwa was chosen to come on ahead of Rhys Murphy and along with Adebayo Azeez caused many problems going forward. He is one of the more experienced squad members and it was young Tom Beere who fired home the decisive strike to give Wimbledon the advantage. Beere was only in the squad after Connor Smith failed a late fitness test.
Not many punters expected AFC Wimbledon to still be involved at this stage of the season, but they’ve exceed all expectations to potentially set up two mouthwatering clashes with MK Dons next season. As a former member of the Crazy Gang, Ardley knows how important this club is to AFC Wimbledon fans and it would be a remarkable rise for the phoenix club.

Akinfenwa came very close to opening the scoring at Kingsmeadow and although he hasn’t been consistent enough this campaign, I believe Ardley will definitely give him game time here.
