Aston Villa v Rotherham predictions and football betting tips for the 3pm kick off in the Championship this weekend including a both teams to score bet.

Can Aston Villa avoid a third defeat in a row as they look to kick start their Championship season? They face a potentially tricky tie at home to Rotherham on Saturday 13th August and we’ve got three betting tips within the match preview.

Aston Villa vs Rotherham Preview

Aston Villa

It’s not been the start the Villa fans envisaged. Defeat on the opening day of the season to Sheffield Wednesday could have been considered unlucky and the Villains did create chances with Ross McCormack being denied late on by Tom Lees.

They made a fair few changes to their starting line-up for the Wednesday night match with Luton Town but came unstuck at the back, eventually losing 3-1. A comedy own goal by Okore didn’t help matters. Mark Bunn was called into action several times and made some decent saves, but his defence didn’t help him and he ended the night on the losing side. From gaffes at the back to rants on social media by the new chairman, it’s never quiet at Villa Park.

Ross McCormack has signed and got 45 minutes against Luton. He came close but was denied by a combination of Johnny Mullins and Christian Walton. Jordan Ayew remains, but continues to be linked with moves away. At the time of writing a bid has been accepted for West Brom defender James Chester. There will be plenty more transfer activity before the end of the month. Judging by the performance on Wednesday night, a defender is definitely required and one who can organise the back four pronto.

Roberto Di Matteo could be the man to sort it out, but he looked aghast as his side surrendered the lead in Hertfordshire. He doesn’t strike you as a disciplinarian and there is a possibility that some of the players still have a Premier League mentality.

They face a tricky tie against a Rotherham side who will compete with them for every ball and get at their back four. The positive for Villa is that Rotherham have now conceded seven goals in their first two games under new manager Alan Stubbs. They’ll hope Ross McCormack can begin to repay his £14m price tag on Saturday afternoon. They need to get the fans back on side and a win at home early in the season will be one small step towards that.

The Millers picked up a point at home to Wolves on the opening day of the season. It could be described as a ‘useful’ point, but considering they blew a 2-0 lead, it’ll be classed as disappointing. Alan Stubbs has started to put his ideas across and he would have been delighted to see his new signing Will Vaulks score a screamer from distance in the opening game of the season.

Stubbs has faced a setback this week with the news that Lee Frecklington will be facing a spell on the sidelines after picking up an injury against the men in gold. He misses this tie and an estimated fortnight out of the team. Joe Mattock and Kirk Broadfoot were also doubts for this tie, but Stubbs is confident they will be in the matchday squad.

More transfer business will be conducted between now and the end of the month as Stubbs looks to add to his small squad. The latest arrival is Darnell Fisher who arrives at the New York Stadium from Celtic. The full back could make his debut this weekend. He suggested Stubbs was the catalyst for the move and the Scouser hopes he can add some more faces to his squad in the next fortnight as the hectic Championship schedule kicks in.

They don’t have EFL Cup commitments any longer though after being dumped out by League Two Morecambe. The Millers were hit for five by the Shrimps with Stubbs saying he ‘can’t defend the undefendable’ and lamenting some of the defending on show. They’ll have to be at their best at the back here with McCormack and Ayew hungry for goals.

Aston Villa v Rotherham Predictions

I know it’s unheard of, but I’m actually going to tip Aston Villa to beat Rotherham for my first Aston Villa vs Rotherham betting tip. I think they can pick up three points here at Villa Park and put their miserable start to the season. They weren’t bad against Sheffield Wednesday, a side in the hunt for promotion. Rotherham conceded five in midweek and although there were changes, some of those players will also start here. Losing Frecklington is a blow to the away side, whose squad still looks a little short on numbers.

With that defence I can’t be confident of a Villa clean sheet though and Rotherham have proved they can be effective going forward with six goals in two games. This gives us the perfect ammunition to have a bet on the both teams to score market. Get on yes at some generous odds for BTTS in Aston Villa vs Rotherham.

Ross McCormack should break his duct here and land us a winning anytime goalscorer tip this weekend. He came close last weekend. He scored a goal in both games against the Millers for Fulham in the 2015/16 season and he did the same in the same 2014/15 season. That’s 4 in 4 against this opposition so my third Aston Villa vs Rotherham prediction is for Ross McCormark to score anytime.
