Euro 2016 betting tips for an each-way bet on the tournament winner – there are some good odds outsiders in the Euro 2016 outright market but who takes our fancy?
None of us will be surprised if one of the pre-tournament favouites lift the European Championships on July 10th. Nations such as the hosts France, current holders Spain and World Champions Germany have been there and done it before and know how to play tournament football. However, the Euro's do have a history of throwing up a surprise winner with two of the last six champions being unfancied before the competition started. Denmark in 1992 and Greece in 2004 have proved that any country has a chance to etch their name in football history so it is worth a glance at the outsiders when predicting your winner.
Euro 2016 Each-Way Betting Tip
I believe that Euro 2016 is wide open as there doesn't seem to be any outstanding side among World or European football at present. That along with many of the so called smaller nations improving has seen the gap between the elite and the rest narrow in recent years. I could make a case for outsiders such as Poland and Croatia to leave their mark on the tournament but the country that really stands out to me is Austria (40/1 with bet365).
History is against them as Austria have only played in one European Championship before and that was when they co-hosted the event back in 2008. This wasn't a tournament to remember for the home fans as their team only managed one point and one goal before being eliminated in the group stage. However, they are a team who are capable of having their best tournament in their history this time around which would be very impressive as they finished third in the 1954 World Cup.
This is the first time they have qualified for a major tournament since France ‘98 and they qualified in style with the second best record in Europe. Nine wins and one draw from ten games saw Austria top a group that included Sweden and Russia by eight points proving that they fully deserve their place in the finals. They scored 22 goals in qualifying and conceded just five times and arrive in France full of confidence for the Euro 2016 Group F matches against Portugal, Hungary and Iceland.
Austria's Euro 2016 Schedule
Drawn in Group F they start the tournament with the most played European international football match in history against neighbours Hungary. Both teams know that a win here would give them a massive chance of qualifying for the second round and Austria will fancy their chances of claiming their first victory in a major finals since 1990 especially if striker Marc Janko can start the tournament in form. The front man scored seven times in qualifying and has a one in two international scoring record. He has recovered from a recent injury to be at the finals and will be fresh to take on the Hungarian's.
They then face a huge game against Portugal before finishing the group stages with a tricky looking fixture against improving first time qualifiers Iceland. I believe that Austria can top this group and improve their chances of avoiding one of the big guns in the round of 16. At this point as we have seen before anything is possible once you reach the knock out stages.
Manager Marcel Koller will be looking towards the experience of captain Christian Fuchs to keep the defence tight. He is a player who is full of confidence after staring in Leicester City's amazing Premier League triumph. With his experience and talented midfielders such as Stoke's Marko Amautovic and Bayern Munich's David Alaba along with Janko up front forming a strong spine to the team, no other country will relish facing them and they could upset one or two more fancied nations on their way to having a very successful tournament.
