Brighton vs Sheffield Wednesday Preview

Brighton

It was an evening to forget in South Yorkshire in Brighton as they conceded twice and lost four players to injury. After the emotional rollercoaster against Middlesbrough, Brighton were looking to bounce back, but it didn’t go according to plan. As expected, Sheffield Wednesday came at them from the beginning and although Brighton largely contained them, two enforced changes in the 1st half didn’t help matters.

Tomer Hemed has been struggling for a while before eventually signalling to the bench whilst Connor Goldson was also unable to continue. To lose a first choice striker and centre half in quick succession was a huge blow for Hughton and you could see the concern etched across his face. Later on, an already heavily strapped Steve Sidwell hobbled off and Brighton made their final change.

More misery for the Seagulls soon after as Anthony Knockaert caught his foot in the turf and appeared to damage his ligaments. The mercurial Frenchman departed on a stretcher soon after and Brighton were a man light.

It’s a huge worry for Brighton fans, who know they don’t possess the largest of squads and some reshuffling will be needed ahead of the second leg. Brighton will need to regroup, but they’ve been sensational at home. They’ve won seven of the last ten on the South Coast and Sheffield Wednesday aren’t the best travellers, so there’s plenty of hope for the home fans.

They’ve only shipped five goals in nine home matches and with Lewis Dunk back in the side after his suspension, they should remain solid. Striker Sam Baldock was one of the few players who managed to stay on the pitch for 90 minutes and he believes the tie isn’t over. The former MK Dons striker believes that Wednesday should have put the game out of sight. Something they may come to regret.

Sheffield Wednesday

It was a decent Friday 13th for those of a Sheffield Wednesday persuasion. They started at 100mph and scored through Fernando Forestieri, only to see it correctly ruled out. Wednesday had fortune looking favourably on them as Brighton lost several first team players throughout, but they were impressive going forward. Ricardo Carvalhal says he won’t get carried away with the 2-0 lead, but they had enough possession and created enough late on to suggest they should have made the deficit larger. Kieran Lee’s strike is well worth watching again, a sublime first touch and finish.

The Owls face a tough task here, winning at the AMEX is difficult and few clubs have done it this season. New Year’s Day was the last time that the Seagulls tasted defeat, when Wolves took all three points. They’ll be hoping Brighton are still seething from missing out on promotion and will look to hit them early.

The visitors play silky football, but they can deploy a plan B if necessary with Adthe Nuhiu coming on and providing some height and power in the frontline. That could be handy here as they look to keep the ball from Brighton. We saw Ross Wallace cut inside and fire his side into the lead, with plenty of width, they can hit the hosts from either flank. Sheffield Wednesday will fancy their chances here, especially with the enforced absences for their opponents. But they’ll have to be careful as we’ve seen stranger things happen in the play-offs…

Brighton Team News

  • Chris Hughton has suggested that neither of the four stricken players will be back in time for the second leg.
  • James Wilson will replace Tomer Hemed whilst Lewis Dunk’s timely return will see him slot in alongside Gordon Greer.
  • His biggest dilemma is the centre midfield position, Dale Stephens is still suspended and it could mean a surprise recall for Andrew Crofts, who spent the latter half of the season at Gillingham.
  • Richie Towell is another option. But Bobby Zamora, Rohan Ince and Solly March are all missing.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

  • No fresh injury worries for Wednesday. Ricardo Carvalhal will have to decide whether Lucas Joao or Marco Matias have done enough to deserve a start.
  • Adthe Nuhiu is another option from the bench.
  • It’s unlikely they’ll be too many changes from the side who ran out 2-0 winners.

Brighton vs Sheffield Wednesday Predictions

With the odds favouring Brighton, it might be best to back Sheffield Wednesday on the Draw No Bet market. The Owls will be determined not to lose this game and keep Brighton out, particularly early on. With so many changes in the Brighton ranks and just two goals scored in three games, it’s hard to make a huge case for the Seagulls. There might be some unfamiliar names on the team-sheet and Wednesday could take advantage of this. My first Brighton vs Sheffield Wednesday betting tip is for Sheffield Wednesday Draw No Bet. They are 5/4 with Sky Bet.

Brighton will have to go for this and goals are required. The match on Friday night could easily have had more than two and I think we’ll go over here. My second Brighton vs Sheffield Wednesday prediction tonight is for Over 2.5 goals. It can be backed at 13/10 with Coral.

Sam Baldock and James Wilson are likely to start up front for the home side and I think one of them will get on the scoresheet here. The latter scored the late equaliser against Derby and I think he can get on the scoresheet here. My third Championship prediction for Brighton vs Sheffield Wednesday tonight is for James Wilson to score anytime. He is 2/1 with Betfair.
