PSG v Chelsea – Both Teams to Score – Yes

This should be a stupendous game of football to welcome in the return of the UEFA Champions League. These games are often tighter affairs than the goal fests we enjoyed in December. Chelsea tend to keep it tight, but they have shown signs of defensive fragility recent as they even let Aston Villa find the net, a team who had only scored 11 goals previously. PSG have plenty of firepower and were involved in an entertaining 2-2 draw with Caen on Saturday. I can see this game finishing 1-1, but both teams should have enough striker power to score during the 90 minutes and get tonight’s accumulator tip off to a winning start.

 

Reading v Wigan – Reading to win

There’s definitely something amiss at Wigan. Malky Mackay was dubbed the saviour, the man who was going to lift them out of their gloom, but it just hasn’t happened for the one time FA Cup winners. They can’t seem to score and they definitely cannot defend. They lost 3-0 to Forest in midweek and confidence seems to be ebbing away from the Latics. Reading had a terrific victory away at Derby in the FA Cup and it may be difficult to keep focus, if they pull out a plum draw in the next round, but they have some decent players and Steve Clarke has improved consistency in performances. They lost to a much improved Leeds side, but that was a blot on their copybook. They should have enough at the Majeski.

 

Doncaster v Crewe – Doncaster to win

Doncaster have hit form. They’ve only lost twice since the New Year, once to leaders Bristol City and then again to away specialists Walsall. In their last two matches, they’ve hit 8 goals without reply. Crewe have improved significantly, they have steered themselves clear of relegation trouble. But I think Donny may have too much for them and should sneak a narrow win. Crewe are better at Gresty Road than they are on the road whilst Donny will have their tails up after impressive wins against Crawley and Yeovil.

 

Scunthorpe v Chesterfield – Scunthorpe to win

I have been impressed with Scunthorpe of late, I was surprised to see them lying in 18th, but they are on the rise and are playing some great stuff under manager Mark Robins. There seems to be a feel good factor around Glamford Park and they were good value for their 3-1 victory over Swindon at the weekend. They lost to Oldham, but apart from that, they have been picking up points. They have plenty of firepower and should have too much for a Chesterfield defence that conceded 3 goals to Leyton Orient, a side completely bereft of confidence. Scunny thumped Orient 4-1 a couple of weeks and should have too much for Chesterfield.

 

Notts County v Sheffield United – Sheffield United win

Quite an obvious one perhaps, but Sheffield United have been on a decent run lately and that pre-season optimism seems to be finally coming to fruition. They have pace in wide areas and the use of Chris Basham at Centre Back means they don’t concede as freely as they once did. John Brayford has been a welcome addition in the full back position and they have some decent youngsters in Terry Kennedy and Che Adams. Notts County haven’t been matching their early season form of late and might succumb to the Bramall Lane bandwagon.
