Wolves v Reading predictions and Boxing Day betting tips for the live Championship match kick-off time 5.30pm.
There were rumours coming out of Molineux at the weekend that Kenny Jackett had been relieved of his duties, but those proved to be unfounded and the former Millwall boss believes that he is still the man to propel Wolves up the table. It’s been a desperately poor run for Wolves, who got thumped 4-1 against Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.
Wolves v Reading Preview
Wolves were one of many people’s favourites to make a push for the play-offs this season, but it hasn’t quite come together. They have looked sensational at times, they have the power of Afobe and the creativity of Jacobs combined with the graft of Kevin McDonald, but their real problems lie at the back.
It is believed that the club have tied up a deal to sign Michael Zyro from Legia Warsaw, whose admirers also include Celtic. But they could benefit from signing an experienced defender. Ethan Ebanks-Landell and Danny Batth are both decent young players, but could benefit from some knowhow and big game experience amongst the back four.
It’s not a complete disaster though, they sit 17th and are looking over their shoulder, but Kenny Jackett is an experienced coach who will be able to turn things around.
Reading have had a managerial change of their own recently as Brian McDermott jumps into the Majeski hotseat again. The amiable former Leeds boss was drafted in to replace Steve Clarke and he knows the club inside out and will be able to add some much needed stability.
The Royals picked up a vital first win for McDermott against Blackburn on Sunday thanks to a Danny Williams wonder strike. Paul Lambert conceded that his side couldn’t do anything to prevent the goal, but it was a feather in the cap for McDermott, as Rovers have been in tremendous form since Lambert took over.
It’s the home form that’s been a problem for Wolves this season with just six wins to their name all season, only two have come at Molineux. Those being against Charlton and Huddersfield, all the way back on the 29th of August and the 3rd of October.
They’ve conceded 11 goals in their last six games home and away and stopping Reading scoring is their first challenge here. Reading have lost five of their last seven, but their early season form, including the time they put five past Ipswich suggest that they can be potent. Nick Blackman is a talismanic figure for the Berkshire side and he will be intent on causing problems for the Wolves defence.
It’s hard to call this one for my Championship predictions – as Brian McDermott hasn’t been in position long, but often new managers can have a bounce effect on a side and that win over Blackburn suggests plenty of improvement has occurred in the short period he’s been in situ.
I think it might be worth betting on Reading on the Handicap or Draw No Bet market.
My first Wolves v Reading prediction is Reading to win (draw no bet). They can be backed at Evens with Ladbrokes which are the best odds for this first football tip.

There are definitely goals in this Wolves side and with Benik Afobe back in the side and scoring in his last two, they should find their way onto the scoresheet. Although Reading have lacked goals recently, I think it’s something McDermott will have had time to work on this week. They have plenty of creative players and should net.
My second football betting tip for Wolves v Reading on Boxing Day is for both teams to score. It can be backed at 19/20 with William Hill.

Reading have Nick Blackman, Orlando Sa, Adam Le Fondre and Matej Vydra to choose from in the forward positions for their starting line-up against Wolves. It makes it difficult to believe that they haven’t been finding the net with regularity. McDermott started Blackman and Vydra against Blackburn and is unlikely to tinker too much with a winning side. Looking further down the list, it might be worth looking at a player who previously played here under McDermott in Gareth McCleary. The Jamaican International is a winger who can chip in with a goal or two and I think the new boss can get the best out of him once again.
My third Wolves v Reading prediction is for Gareth McCleary to score anytime. He can be backed at 5/1 with Coral, the best odds for our football tip.
