Whilst browsing the Championship betting odds ahead of the new Football League season, I came across some Newcastle specials on the William Hill website and there was one in particular which interested me.
Newcastle to go unbeaten at home in the 2016/17 season – 16/1 William Hill.
It seems a long time ago since the Magpies were playing at this level, but it was back in 2009/10 and they made St James’ Park a fortress.
Losing just four times all season under Chris Hughton (Blackpool, Derby, Nottingham Forest and Scunthorpe) they breezed to promotion at the first time of asking. All of those reverses were away from home.
Can Newcastle go unbeaten at St James’ Park?
Rafa Benitez is the man at the helm and has Champions League medals on his CV. They have recruited sensibly for this level and look a real threat. They are a short price to win promotion in the Championship promotion odds, but you won’t find too many pundits making a case against them. Transfers in 2009/10 included Leon Best, Peter Lovenkrands, Mike Williamson and Wayne Routledge. This year, they’ve recruited Matt Ritchie, Dwight Gayle and Grant Hanley. Kevin Nolan and Andy Carroll bagged 37 goals between them whilst the ageing Lovenkrands chipped in with 16.
A tremendously meek Premier League season ended in disappointment and relegation for the Toon Army, but their away form (and Steve McClaren) were mainly to blame. They only lost five times in front of their own fans all season and although there were some disappointing draws in there, they finished the season with a thumping 5-1 victory against Spurs. Defeats to Leicester and Arsenal, last season’s top two can be excused, but slip ups against Everton, Watford and Bournemouth were less excusable. All of those arrived before the Benitez was drafted in.
In my opinion, the closest rivals to Newcastle this season will be Norwich and Sheffield Wednesday. The latter were poor on the road last season and it’s hard to see them taking anything from St James’ Park. Brighton also struggled on their travels and the Tyneside stadium can be a hostile place to visit.
Dwight Gayle should provide plenty of goals whilst if the Euro 2016 Sissoko can show his face, they’ll be hard to stop. There’s also plenty of hope surrounding Adam Armstrong following his loan spell at Coventry and the aforementioned Matt Ritchie is capable of the sublime.
Newcastle Betting Specials 2016/17
The other Newcastle specials are – Newcastle to go through the 2016/17 season unbeaten. It’s a larger price at 40/1, but I’d be less confident about this one. There are some tough grounds to visit next season and few teams emerge with points from Hillsborough, Portman Road and even the Pirelli Stadium.
I’m going to stick with an unbeaten home record for my Newcastle betting tip this season. If they can replicate the 2009/10 season with a superior squad (in my opinion), then the 16/1 looks tremendous value.
