Southend v Burton predictions and betting tips for tonight’s League One fixture including the best odds for our tipsters’ three best bets.
There’s a live televised game in League One tonight as the leaders Burton travel to Essex to face Southend United.
Southend vs Burton Predictions
The transition from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink to Nigel Clough has been seamless at Burton and their form has not dropped off as many people had predicted. They are still as solid as they were in early season and despite the occasional setback (1-2 loss to Shrewsbury), they have a knack of bouncing back.
They’ve won six of the last eight games in League One and continue to operate with a stingy defence and an industrious midfield. They’ve conceded just five goals in their last eight games as they travel to face 7th place Southend.
Southend had a mid-season blip, but Phil Brown is doing a very competent job at Roots Hall and they’ve scored six without reply in their last two home games against Colchester and high flying Coventry City.
Burton have won 64% of their away games though and they are possibly a little more effective on the road, which is part of their style and success. Only Walsall and Millwall have better form on the road than the Brewers and this will be a tough ask for the hosts.
However, their last away match against Rochdale ended in defeat, a strange game in which they found themselves 2-0 down early on and didn’t have enough firepower to claim a point.
Southend have lost their last two matches, but both were on the road and they were to in-form Scunthorpe and Bradford. They’ve conceded just 17 of their 38 games at home, where they appear to be more solid. It’s hard to see them keeping Burton at bay though as the Brewers have scored in each of their last 13 matches.
Whenever Burton have faced teams near the top of the table, they have won away from home. Southend are in 7th, so they aren’t far away. Burton won 3-0 at Gillingham, beat Wigan by a single goal and won at both Coventry and Peterborough. It’s the matches in which they are expected to simply turn up and win where they often trip up. Defeats on the road include Fleetwood and Bury, the aforementioned Rochdale match and there’s also a 1-2 home defeat to Shrewsbury.
They will raise their game for this one I am sure and I can’t back Southend, who have failed to net in their last two games. Neither of two sides draw frequently, which puts me off backing a stalemate. Burton have not drawn away from home all season, whilst six of Southend’s eight draws were before mid-November. The Shrimps have already lost here to Walsall and Millwall this season and both teams have similar away form to tonight’s opponents.
The first of my Southend v Burton predictions is for Burton to win. They can be backed at 8/11 with Betfair.

Despite being top of the table, their goalscoring record doesn’t reflect that. Burton are a mere 10th in the goals scored list but proudly look down on the rest of the division from atop the best defence list. They’ve kept five clean sheets in the last eight and I think they will continue to keep teams out throughout the rest of the season. Southend have scored 41 goals this season, but have failed to find the net in three of their last six home matches and I think this one will be low scoring.
The second of my Southend v Burton betting tips is for the match to have Under 2.5 goals. It can be backed at 5/6 with Sky Bet.

Anyone who has read one of my Burton previews previously knows that I am a fan of Mark Duffy, who is on loan from Birmingham. He is always a decent price to score during the 90 minutes and from his position on the right of the midfield, he is able to cut in and unleash one. He is the 3rd highest scorer with four this season, with top scorer El Khayati having followed JFH to QPR.
My last Southend vs Burton prediction for tonight’s match is for Mark Duffy to score anytime. He is 5/1 with Coral.
