Southampton host Liverpool at St Mary's for Sunday's early kick off and I have three football tips for this one.
Southampton vs Liverpool Predictions
Liverpool drew with Manchester United in Thursday night's Europa League last 16 second leg in a result that saw them through to the quarter finals of the competition. They played well in that game, just as they did in the first leg, and it also saw the Reds stretch their unbeaten run to four games in all competitions.
Southampton ended their run of three games without a win with an excellent victory over Stoke at the Brittania Stadium last weekend, with Graziano Pelle scoring his first goals in 12 games. They've been inconsistent this season, but they still sit in 7th place in the table seven points behind fourth place Manchester City, so a push for Europe is still on the cards despite most of the teams around them having games in hand.
Sadio Mane should play in this one after having the red card he received in the Stoke win rescinded. Charlie Austin is out with a knee injury and Jay Rodriguez and Florin Gardos are out. For Liverpool, James Milner will miss this one through suspension after his red card in the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace and Alberto Moreno has joined Lucas Leiva, Joe Gomez and Danny Ings on the sidelines after picking up a hamstring injury.
Liverpool have a great recent record against Ronald Koeman's men. They battered them 6-1 in the Carling Cup earlier on in the season and have won their last two Premier League visits to St Mary's too. They've scored 13 goals in their last four league games, winning their last three, so it looks like an away win is on the cards. However, with that win over Stoke, confidence has been restored at St Mary's and for me the most likely result is the draw which is my first Southampton vs Liverpool prediction. There's been plaudits a plenty for Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster. He returned from a long term injury to break Paul Jones' Southampton record of 708 minutes without conceding a goal after breaking a similar Scottish league record when he was at Celtic. A clean sheet here would be Forster's 20th in just 41 games, and if it was anyone else his team were playing I'd say he'd get it. With Liverpool in such good form, as annoyingly difficult they can be to predict I think they'll get on the scoresheet here.
