Reading v Ipswich Preview

Reading

The Royals are adapting to life under Jaap Stam and the Dutch boss says ‘it’s too early to look at the table’. A quick glance tells us that Reading sit in 15th place after the first set of games in the Championship.

There is positivity around the club since Stam’s appointment. But, Stam admitted this week he is still looking for another striker. An ambitious move for Asamoah Gyan didn’t come off as the former Sunderland hitman failed a medical at the club. ‘If we are going to spend money, we need players to be fit and ready’ said the boss. But it still leaves them a little light up top.

The transfer window may be shut, but Reading can still sign a striker on aa free transfer if there is one which fits the bill.

On a positive note, Yann Kermogant struck the winner as Reading left it late to beat Cardiff two weeks ago. The 34 year old still has plenty to give and it will be a huge relief to see him get off the mark for the season. It was an important three points for the club as well.

Joseph Mendes is the only other striker on the books and he has been largely restricted to appearances from the bench.

Stam said he isn’t interested in last season’s scoreline and acknowledges it won’t be easy against Ipswich. They’ve been working hard during training this week and didn’t suffer from too many departures on the International front.

They have been strong at home and should be confident of getting something from this game. They opened up the season with a 2-0 win against Preston and held high scoring Brighton to a 2-2 draw last time out.

Few teams will leave Berkshire with all three points this season, but it’s the Royals away form that could be troublesome and prevent them from progressing.

John Swift is in a battle to be fit for this match as he looks to shake off a recent injury.

Ipswich

Ipswich has had a mixed start to the campaign and lost their talisman Daryl Murphy to Newcastle towards the end of the transfer window. They replaced him with the inconsistent Leon Best, who has been recovering from a hip injury, but should make it into the squad for Friday night.

Ipswich fans are worrying about the lack of goals in their side. David McGoldrick is injured again, Freddie Sears is out of form whilst Murphy has headed to the North East. McCarthy was hugely reluctant to let Murphy go, but the two year deal at Newcastle was too good to turn down for the striker.

Johnny Williams also joined the club on a season long loan, but he won’t be seen in a blue shirt until at least the end of the month after picking up an injury. Williams is a familiar face to the Tractor Boys fans and he add some dynamism to the midfield.

Ipswich have scored six times this season, four of which have been netted by loanee midfielder Grant Ward, one by left back Jonas Knudsen and the other by David McGoldrick on the opening day of the season.

At the back, they’ve kept it fairly tight with just five conceded in as many games.

Mick McCarthy’s sides are always hard to break down and although their away form leaves a lot to be desired, they should be able to make it difficult for the Royals. The aforementioned Ward will be lively and always looking to create chances.

They’ve won just twice away from home in 2016 and they struggle away from Portman Road. There are plenty of draws amongst those results though.

Reading v Ipswich Predictions

Reading have been strong at home so far this season and I think that will continue here. It’s not going to be a 5-1 demolition, but they should take all three points from this game so my first Championship prediction for Reading vs Ipswich is for the home side to win and the best odds for this are 5/4 with Coral.

Over/Under 2.5 Goals Bet

Ipswich have always been tough to break down, but both sides are struggling for goals this season. The Tractor Boys have only hit two since the opening day of the campaign and it took 89 minutes for Reading to find a way past Cardiff. Get on under 2.5 goals in Reading vs Ipswich on Friday night – in the Reading vs Ipswich betting odds the best price is currently 5/8 with 888Sport.

Anytime Goalscorer

The Royals goal could come from the midfield area, but with Swift possibly absent for this match, it’s better to side with wide players. Gareth McCleary is off the mark for the campaign and could pose a few problems for the Ipswich backline so he looks a good selection for an anytime goalscorer tip to complete our Reading vs Ipswich predictions for Friday night’s clash.
