Preston vs Wigan Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview

Preston vs Wigan predictions and betting tips for the Friday night Championship fixture this week including an anytime goalscorer tip and the best odds for each selection.

After their midweek success in the EFL Cup over Premier League Bournemouth, it’s back to the bread and butter of the league on Friday night for Preston as they host Wigan. We’ve got the best three football betting tips for the match.

Preston vs Wigan Preview

Preston

It’s been a poor start for Preston, who started the season with three consecutive defeats. There have been flashes and moments of hope such as the 0-2 win away at QPR and the 3-0 victory here at Cardiff, but they’ve been promptly followed by defeats and putting an unbeaten run together is seemingly a pipe dream at the moment.

The Lilywhites are looking to bounce back from a 5-0 mauling at the hands of Brentford last weekend, although their cup exploits will have helped matters. Simon Makienok’s hat-trick was enough to overcome Bournemouth in the EFL Cup and they march on into the 4th round.

Simon Grayson’s side were extremely tough to break down last season finishing with a 0 goal difference having scored and conceded 45 goals. They’ve already shipped 12, just 8 games into this season.

Makienok’s goalscoring exploits could earn him a start here, but the Danish striker urged caution claiming it may not be enough to warrant a start here. Jermaine Beckford is struggling with an injury and is unlikely to be fit enough to play any part. Stevie May and Calum Woods are long-term absentees.

Grayson made 10 changes for the Bournemouth matches with only Greg Cunningham starting both games. It’ll be interesting to see how many of the players in midweek have done enough to earn 90 minutes on Friday night.

5 of Preston’s 7 goals have arrived here at Deepdale and if they can recreate the Cardiff performance they should have too much for poor travellers Wigan.

Inconsistencies need to be ironed out, but Grayson is the right man to do it and they should give a good account of themselves here.

Wigan

After the elation of promotion, it’s been a disappointing start to the Championship season for Wigan Athletic and Gary Caldwell.

They currently sit 3rd bottom with only Blackburn and Cardiff beneath them and just one win in eight games (v Blackburn)

Caldwell’s side offer plenty going forward and Will Grigg has found his shooting boots, but they’ve been appalling on the road so far and despite a short trip here, they might not pick up three points here. 10 goals conceded in 4 games is poor and they need to tighten up.

Jake Buxton has labelled this game a derby that they must win and says he’ll make sure the squad is up for this clash.

3000 fans should travel up the M6 for this game and they’ll be desperate to see the Latics pick up their first points on the road.

There was evident improvement at the weekend, clinching a goalless draw with Fulham. A clean sheet was welcome, but frustration remained at the other end and it’s now just 2 goals in 4 games.

Preston are still licking their wounds following their 5-0 defeat to Brentford and their priority will be on defence, which could make it tougher for the Latics to break through.

Wigan have a tough game against Wolves coming up in midweek and will see this game as chance to pick up points.

Preston vs Wigan Predictions

I think Preston’s cup antics will take a bit out of them here. They’ll be tough to break down though and I fancy them to pick up at least a point. Wigan are struggling to find the back of the net and unlike previous seasons, they can’t add a striker on loan in an attempt to solve this. It should be a fiercely fought contest, but I give Preston a slightly better chance given their recent 3-0 win over Cardiff.

Half-time Score Betting Tip

Neither side will want to lose this game. Wigan looked solid in their draw with Fulham last weekend. I’m going to take a chance on a goalless first 45 for my second Preston vs Wigan betting tip this weekend.

Anytime Goalscorer Tips

Simon Makienok doesn’t seem convinced that he’s done enough to merit a start here. The Dane could play some part and will be full of confidence. Grayson has favoured Eoin Doyle and Jordan Hugill as a front pair recently and I’ll opt for the latter, who netted in the win over Cardiff.

Anytime Goalscorer Prediction – Jordan Hugill – 13/5 with Paddy Power: BET HERE.
