Italy face a tricky encounter with the visit of Bulgaria on Sunday. Italy currently sit second in Group H with Croatia sat atop the pile. Both nations have 15 points though Croatia have a superior goal difference. Not far behind are Norway on 13 points in what has become an extremely interestingly poised group.

 

Croatia and Norway also battle it out this Sunday with Italy taking on fourth place Bulgaria, who are on eight points. The Italians will be hoping Croatia slip up so they can take advantage and top the group as it comes to the tail end of qualifying for Euro 2016.

In their last match the Azzurri struggled to find their way past Malta. A 69th minute goal by Southampton’s Graziano Pelle proved to be the difference as Italy looked far from convincing. That performance would not of convinced their fans of finishing in the to two automatic qualifying places for Euro 2016. Grabbing all three points against opponents Bulgaria this weekend will go a long way to ensuring they do not miss out on being in France next summer.

 

If they can secure all three points they could potentially top the group by the end of the weekend if Croatia fail to take maximum points from Norway. As for Bulgaria their hopes of qualifying for the Euro’s are all but over, as they sit five points behind Norway in the race for the third and final qualifying place.

 

Italy certainly have enough quality to overcome Bulgaria, with the added fact Bulgaria are not really playing for anything at this point it should be a comfortable win for the Italians but as we all know football is a funny old game so Italy slipping up at home might not be off the table.

 

Bulgaria’s slim chances of qualification are all but over after they lost 1-0 to Norway on Thursday. That result has left Norway within touching distance of the top two. Bulgaria though have looked a different side since Ivaylo Petev took over the reigns but they are still without a competitive home win since beating Malta 6-0 during the FIFA World Cup qualifying back in March 2013. They impressed during the slim loss to Norway and have indeed improved, the hosts came close to scoring in the 21st minute when Ivelin Popov’s free kick was smartly saved by Norway goal keeper Ørjan Nyland.

 

An improved Bulgarian side will find life difficult at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday with the Italians knowing how vital a win would be in terms of automatic qualification for Euro 2016. Italy to win by two goals to nil has odds of 23/4 and is the score line I myself am backing.
