Football Accumulator Tips – 20th October.
Bayer Leverkusen v AS Roma
Best Bet – Both Teams to Score? Yes.
Bayer Leverkusen sit 7th in the Bundesliga and have been relatively thrifty when it comes to conceding goals, but in the Champions League, they’re always a good bet for an open encounter. There have been over 2.5 goals in their last 3 Champions League matches whilst the last 3 H2Hs between these sides have finished 3-1, 1-1 and 2-2 and they always seem to bring the best out of one another. Roma lost 3-2 to BATE last time out whilst Leverkusen were edged out 2-1 by Barcelona. The Italians have scored 3 and conceded 4 from their opening two UCL games, all the evidence here points towards goals for both sides.
Arsenal v Bayern Munich
Best Bet – Bayern Munich to score over 1.5 team goals.
Despite their poor start in the competition, Arsenal can still qualify, but it isn’t ideal to be facing the German champions twice in quick succession. The Gunners haven’t beaten Bayern since 2005 when they won 1-0 here and it doesn’t look like happening again. They’ve been in sparkling form in the Premier League, but they can’t seem to replicate that on the bigger stage and a lot will depend on whether Alexis Sanchez is suffering any ill effects from the air miles he clocked up during the International Break. Bayern will be without Arjen Robben which is a blow to anyone backing them, but they should still have too much and with the man in form Robert Lewandowski passed fit, you have to fancy them to score at least a couple.
Bolton v Birmingham
Best Bet – Under 2.5 goals.
It’s been a season of differing fortunes for these sides. Bolton haven’t started well and have struggled with their threadbare squad. After a couple of positive results, they’ve lost to QPR and Burnley in quick succession, being unable to score against their Lancashire rivals. They’re back at the Macron here and I fancy there to be a paucity of goals. Birmingham are impressing under Gary Rowett and the tactically astute former Burton man knows how to set his side up for an away performance. Their most common scoreline on the road is 0-2, having been victorious by that scoreline in 3 of their 5 away games this season. Bolton have drawn 2 of their last 3 home games 0-0 and whilst they’ve scored 5 here, they’ve only conceded 4.
Gillingham v Scunthorpe
Best Bet – Gillingham win.
A last minute goal from in-form Rory Donnelly gave Gillingham all 3 points at Crewe and that made it two wins out of 2 on the road and kept the Gills competitive at the top. They have the best home form in the league and barring the 3-3 draw to Oldham last time out at the Priestfield, they should be good to go again here. Scunthorpe have started to improve gradually, but they aren’t great on the road and manager Mark Robins recently admitted that had he been at any other club, he wouldn’t have survived the chop. This was due to the Iron’s poor start, but with Paddy Madden, they’re always a threat. Gillingham’s 17 goals at home this season should be enough to see them through here.
Sheffield United v Fleetwood
Best Bet – Over 2.5 goals.
Sheffield United are always good for a goal or two, they have scored in each and every one of their home games and average 2.67 goals at Brammall Lane. They await the visit of Fleetwood, who are fresh of the back of thumping frontrunners Burton by 4 goals to nil. According to reports, they played exceptionally well on the break under new manager Steven Pressley and they could employ the same game plan here. They scored at Gillingham and Wigan, despite getting beaten by both and they have plenty of goalscoring threat in the shape of Bobby Grant and Declan McManus. Jamie Proctor also scored at the weekend and Jamille Matt is waiting in the wings. Nigel Adkins is a positive manager and he will want his Sheffield United side to attack as they look to catch the teams above them.
Yeovil v Mansfield
Best Bet – Mansfield win.
One of the more surprising rises up the table this season have been Mansfield, who are challenging for the Play-offs under the youngest FL manager Adam Murray. Its yet more evidence in the exercise of maintaining your manager and building a team for future success. They haven’t achieved anything yet, so we aren’t getting carried away, but they have exceeded expectations as they were tipped to struggle by many in pre-season. Bringing in the experience of Craig Westcarr will have helped and they have extra goals in the shape of the returning Matt Green. Ryan Tafazoli is a decent defender as well. They face Yeovil here, who are 22nd in the league and are struggling for consistency under Paul Sturrock. The Stags have already beaten Stevenage, Newport and Dagenham, all teams who sit next to the Glovers in the table and I fancy Mansfield to continue their impressive away form here at Huish Park.
