Panathinaikos v Ajax Tip – Panathinaikos win

We’re off to Greece for our first selection as Panathinaikos host Ajax. Ajax have spluttered through their Champions League qualifying campaign without ever getting properly into gear. They needed Davy Klaasen to rescue them against PAOK before they were thumped by FK Rostov of Russia. They always seem to struggle in these competitions of late and I think the journey to Greece and the intimidating stadia could result in them being defeated here. Manager Peter Bosz is still getting his ideas across and the signing of Hakim ZIyech is excellent, but he was one step ahead of his teammates at times at the weekend. The home side are hard to beat here and haven’t lost in front of their own fans since the start of February. They haven’t played a game since the 18th of August, so all their focus will be on this game.

 

Braga v Gent Tip – Draw

A game in which I think the spoils will be shared. Braga have taken 4 points from a possible 6 at home so far in the new Primeira Liga season drawing with Rio Ave and beating Boavista. They are strong here domestically, but they didn’t any of their last two games here in the Europa League drawing with Sion and losing to Shakhtar. Gent have started their season well and although they had a reasonably simple qualification for this tournament, they will give teams problems. They beat Lokeren at the weekend and that follows on from a creditable 2-2 draw away at Anderlecht – a side who have qualified for the Champions League. They’ve drawn a whopping 6 of their last 8 games away from home which makes me they’ll be happy with a point here.

 

Salzburg v Krasnodar Tip – Salzburg win

A win predicted for the home side here as Krasnodar have really struggled on the road in the Russian Premier League. They’ve not shown the kind of form that they would have hoped for this season and they currently sit 7th with no win in their last 4. It was a positive start to the campaign which has just tailed off and they may struggle with a visit to Austria. They couldn’t find a way past Ufa in their last away game and haven’t scored on the road for just over a month. Salzburg are not playing in the strongest league, but they come into this with some good results behind them. They won 4-0 away at Admira at the weekend and they’ve won their last two home league games scoring 5 goals. It’s the away side’s dip in form which concerns me here, so the Salzburg win seems like the best bet.

 

Mainz v St Etienne Tip – St Etienne Double Chance X2 (Draw or win)

Both these sides are in the opening exchanges of their new domestic seasons. St Etienne had a very tough fixture on Friday night, but managed to hold PSG to a 1-1 draw at the Parc Des Princes. They’ve looked very solid recently and Les Vertes should be able to get something here. Mainz haven’t been bad, but they lost on the opening day of the season away at Dortmund (no shame in that) and that was followed by a crazy madcap 4-4 draw with Hoffenheim at the weekend. Conceding 6 goals in 2 games isn’t ideal and their poor defence could be their undoing here. St Etienne have conceded just 1 goals in 3 games now and will look to keep it tight. They have the personnel to hurt Mainz and don’t be surprised if the French side get at least a draw here.
