Football Accumulator Tips Sunday 16th October
Southampton v Burnley – Southampton win
The Saints have the benefit of a rest following the International Break. In recent weeks, they’ve played on the Sunday following European exploits on Thursday evening. They’ve been in decent form under Claude Puel and are gradually improving and look like they’re buying into the former Nice boss’ methods. Charlie Austin has been in terrific form and they are unbeaten at St Mary’s. They’ve won their last three home games in all competitions to nil and I think Burnley will struggle to break them down. The Clarets are very strong at Turf Moor, but they’ve been disappointing away from home, losing to Chelsea and Leicester. Southampton were excellent away at out-of-sorts West Ham and if they can replicate that performance, they’ll pick up three points.
St Etienne v Dijon – St Etienne win
St Etienne haven’t been great to watch this season, but they’ve been effective at home. They’ve won late on in games and have only conceded two goals here all season. They’ve collected 10 points from a possible 12 with only a 0-0 draw with Toulouse preventing a maximum return. They did hit three against Lille here last time out and will be confident coming into this fixture against poor travellers Dijon. The away side have netted just a single goal this season on the road and conceded seven. They have lost to PSG, Lille and Angers away from home, the latter two are in the lower half of the table. Dijon have shown signs of life at home recently including an impressive 3-0 win against Rennes, but away from home they’ve shown nothing and St Etienne are strong on home soil.
Athletic Bilbao v Real Sociedad – Athletic Bilbao win
Athletic Bilbao are looking to bounce back following their disappointment against Malaga. They were down to 10 men in that game so excuses can be made and they should be strong back at home. Ernesto Valverde’s side had won four games on the spin prior to that and been in decent form. They’ve played three times at home this season and have won two, narrowly losing the third to Barcelona (1-0). Adruiz is always a threat and can cause Real Sociedad plenty of problems. The visitors are on a three game losing run away from home, falling to Eibar, Sporting Gijon and Villareal, most of which have similar home form to Bilbao. Sociedad have impressed at home recently, but away from home their form is questionable with just a single victory over struggling Osasuna to their name.
Genoa v Empoli – Genoa win
Genoa are in decent nick. They aren’t scoring many goals, but they are keeping things tight. They beat Bologna 1-0 in their last match. That was away from home and against a side who have started the season well. Matches between these sides rarely produce goals, so a 1-0 win could on the cards. They’ve won one and drawn two of their matches here this season with one of those being an impressive 0-0 draw with free-scoring Napoli. Empoli are struggling for consistency this season. They are better at home and haven’t scored away from home yet. They drew 0-0 with Torino, but lost 2-0 at Lazio and Udinese. The home side should edge this.
Real Salt Lake v Sporting KC – Draw
These two sides are battling it out for a place in the end of season play-offs. Real Salt Lake’s recent form has been poor though with no win in five. They’ve grabbed a couple of draws here recently although their 3-3 draw against LA Galaxy definitely contained an element of luck. Sporting KC are not great travellers, but they’ve improved of late. They’ve failed to win 13 of their last 14 away matches, so I can’t see them running away with all three points here, but I can see them battling for a draw. RSL have drawn 7 of their 16 home matches this season including 2 of the last 3 and I think we could see another one. The Seattle Sounders are sniffing around the final play-off place so neither side will want to come away with nothing.
