Bristol Rovers vs Cardiff City Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview

Bristol Rovers v Cardiff City predictions and football betting tips for the EFL Cup on Thursday 11th August including the best three football tips.

With plenty of shocks in the 1st round of the EFL Cup so far, can Bristol Rovers dump Cardiff City out of the competition on Thursday night? We fancy them ruffle the Bluebirds feathers.

Bristol Rovers v Cardiff Preview

Bristol Rovers

It wasn’t the start that manager Darrell Clarke was anticipating as his side succumbed to a 3-1 defeat to Scunthorpe at Glanford Park.

Rovers had taken the lead through last season’s top scorer Matty Taylor, but Scunthorpe turned on the style in front of a big home crowd to win 3-1. The third and final goal from Kyle Wootton was a case of The Gas looking for an equaliser and pushing too far forward.

New arrival Peter Hartley is confident his side can turn it around and says he saw enough from his teammates to suggest they will have a decent season. Away at Scunthorpe was a tough opener for Bristol Rovers and they will have many an easier assignment between now and May.

Clarke is still trying to add to his squad before the window closes. He hopes for ‘3 or 4’ additions following a quiet summer so far. The aforementioned Hartley arrived, but the boss was faithful to the side which achieved promotion last season.

Former manager Paul Trollope is back at the Memorial Ground tonight after successfully managing the club before being sacked in 2010. His current assistant Lennie Lawrence also worked alongside him at Rovers.

They’ve been traditionally strong at home over the last couple of season and Clarke is desperate to get the first win of the season. He says it ‘will get the ball rolling’ and they can build on it. You sense that the home side will field are pretty strong 11 here.

They haven’t lost a competitive game here since the 24th of November 2015 when they suffered a shock reverse to Stevenage. They’ve won 13 of the last 14 and I fancy them to continue that run in front of the home faithful.

Cardiff City

Cardiff started the season with a 0-0 draw at St Andrews. It may seem like an underwhelming start to the campaign, but a clean sheet on the road isn’t bad and they tend to be strong at home, so it bodes well for the season.

The aforementioned Paul Trollope is in the dugout and returning to the Memorial Stadium after a successful stint. He replaced Russell Slade who divided fans. On one hand, he guided the Bluebirds to the brink of the play-offs and they had very decent home form. On the other, the style of play was a little turgid and they relied on set pieces to create opportunities. Slade also played few youngsters.

Trollope has this week left his role with Wales to concentrate solely on Cardiff City.

Trollope is helped by the impressive Lex Immers signing a new contract. The Dutchman joined permanently from Feyenoord whilst Kenneth Zohore also makes his loan permanent. The striker didn’t start at the weekend, but he always looks lively, if not a little raw and will surely start here.

Fabio and Dikgacoi look set to leave the club in the coming days and there could still be one or two additions to the squad before August 31st. Rumours persist of bids from rival Championship clubs for Aron Gunnarsson.

There are no injury worries for Trollope and he insisted there would no ‘wholesale’ changes, but he wants to keep his squad fresh and ‘will look at personnel’ ahead of this tie.

A few changes in the offing perhaps, but he will want his side to find their first goals of the season here after their profligate start to the campaign.

Bristol Rovers v Cardiff Predictions

In the Bristol Rovers vs Cardiff City betting odds the price seems quite generous on a side who rarely lose at home. Bristol Rovers are less likely to make changes in this one. There will be a few alterations for Cardiff as Paul Trollope casts one eye towards QPR on Sunday. I fancy the home side to book their place in the next round for my first Bristol Rovers vs Cardiff prediction.

Matty Taylor showed his goalscoring touch hadn’t deserted him at the weekend. You have to go back to the start of November 2015 to find the last time Bristol Rovers failed to score here. Cardiff should find their first goal of the season as Darrell Clarke’s side looked a little generous at the back against Scunthorpe so for my second Bristol Rovers v Cardiff prediction I am going into the both teams to score odds.

I’m going to take a chance on Kenneth Zohore for my anytime goalscorer bet on this EFL Cup match. He should get a chance to impress his new boss here and he had a good end to last season.
