Both Teams to Score Tips
Brentford v Leeds Tips
This one sounds like a 1-1, but I am not basing my selection for the BTTS tip on that. Brentford have scored 41 goals this season and are the 5th highest scorers in the league. They have scored in six of their last eight games, failing to score against defensively sound Middlesbrough on that run. They’ve kept just two clean sheets since the start of November and the unsettled James Tarkowski is unlikey to be around for long to provide assurance at the back. Leeds have failed to score twice in the last 10 matches and one of those was against Sheffield Wednesday when they really should have found the target with several missed chances and a controversial disallowed goal. Their last two clean sheets have both come at Elland Road and although they are not a bad defensive unit, I think they will be severely tested by high scoring Brentford.
Bury v Crewe Tips
Two out-of-form teams meets at Gigg Lane. Bury got a vital victory over Oldham on Saturday to stop the rot and they face another struggler here in the shape of bottom place Crewe. The Railwaymen got a creditable 1-1 draw with Wigan at the weekend although it sounds like they were lucky not to have conceded a second. Crewe have conceded 49 times in 28 games so far, amazingly 16 fewer than Colchester, but they have a lot of work to do at the back. Going forward, they average more than 1 a game and have scored eight times in their last three away matches, winning one of them. Bury have scored in each of their last four home matches and they should be able to find a way past the men from Cheshire.
Blackpool v Sheffield United Tips
Blackpool have improved significantly over the past few weeks, they’ve signed well in the January transfer window, which is a rarity and they are starting to put together a run as they look to escape towards mid-table. Sheffield United are in the right half of the table, but they are yet to look convincing as title challengers. Just one win in their last four leaves them losing ground on the teams at the top. They have found the net 10 times in their last 5 games though and Billy Sharp is looking back to his best. He also has a penchant for scoring against the Seasiders. Blackpool equalised in the last minute against Walsall at the weekend and they have a number of strikers to choose from, some of whom could give the Blades something to think about.
Morecambe v Mansfield Tips
After a mid-season blip, Morecambe are back scoring and collecting points. They were outclassed by Northampton at the weekend, but they are back at the Globe and they should be able to net against a Mansfield side who haven’t kept a clean sheet since the 24th of October. Morecambe have netted in each of their last nine games and have plenty of firepower. Paul Mullin, Shaun Miller or Kevin Ellison from midfield could all easily chip in. Saturday was the first time Mansfield failed to score since the end of November, but they have a decent enough away record to suggest they’ll make a game of this. Their two most recent blanks away from home were against high flying Northampton and Portsmouth.
Leyton Orient v Newport
Leyton Orient usually score and Newport usually concede. Those were my first thoughts as I looked at the goal records in this one. Orient kept their first clean sheet for three months on Saturday as they shutout Wycombe. That’s just five for the season though, with the first three being in August or September. They’ve only failed to score twice all season and that shouldn’t be a problem here. Newport have kept out low scoring pair Yeovil and York in recent months and also stopped Wycombe getting on the scoresheet, but generally, they’ve been generous defensively. They’ve only failed to score twice since the middle of October and I think they will find a way past Orient. It should be an entertaining affair.
