Arsenal host Southampton at the Emirates on Tuesday night and both teams go into this one in contrasting Premier League form.

 

Premier League Predictions – Arsenal v Southampton

 

Since Southampton were knocked out of the FA Cup at the hands of Crystal Palace, they've won the last three league games, including a 1-0 away victory against Manchester United last time out. They had a poor first half of the season but after picking up those wins they're now only three points off sixth place and are putting in the kind of performances we've come to expect from Ronald Koeman's men.

 

As for Arsenal, they haven't won in the last three league games. Draws at Liverpool and Stoke were followed by a home defeat to Chelsea. They did get back to winning ways in their FA Cup Fourth Round win over Championship Burnley, but this is a tougher game for the Gunners and I think they'll come unstuck.

 

Arsenal team news – Alexis Sanchez and Francis Coquelin made their first starts since injury in the Cup win and should start here. Per Mertesacker is available after missing that tie through suspension and could also start (great news for Shane Long… more of him later).

 

Southampton team news – Southampton don't have any new injury concerns with Jay Rodriguez and Florin Gardos long term absentees and head into this game after having a week’s rest. New signing Charlie Austin made a dream start to life with the Saints scoring the winner on his debut at Old Trafford but I'm expecting him to be on the bench again as he's still not fully match fit.

 

Who Will Win? Arsenal or Southampton?

Arsenal lost the last meeting between these two. By lost, read thrashed. Southampton recorded a fantastic 4-0 victory over Arsene Wenger's boys at St Mary's and really it could have been more. The Saints have a decent record against Arsenal too, only losing one of the last five, winning three. Koeman himself seems to have the knack of getting results over the Gunners, only losing twice in the last ten games he's managed against them. So I think you can guess where I'm going with this. Yes I'm going for the away side to win for my football tips.

Back to Shane Long. He put in a man of the match performance in the Boxing Day massacre scoring twice and giving the Arsenal defence, in particular Mertesacker, quite literally the run-around. Even if Wenger leaves out Per, the pace of Long will cause Arsenal all sorts of problems
