Saturday’s Accumulator Tips
Brentford to beat Millwall
Brentford gained a morale boosting win on Wednesday night at Forest, despite the recent form of Stuart Pearce’s side, the City Ground is never an easy place to go and they emerged 3-1 winners. A trip to The Den is never looked upon as easy, but Millwall haven’t been pulling up any trees recently, they won well over Cardiff and got a creditable draw with Blackburn, but Mark Warburton’s side should have too much firepower for the Lions and they should run out eventual winners.
Birmingham to beat Cardiff
You may think I am mad backing Birmingham if you have a look at their home record, but under the stewardship of Gary Rowett, they are already far more organised than previously and they are already a far cry from the team that got pummelled 8-0 by Bournemouth. They triumphed over a decent Watford side in midweek and I can’t see why they won’t do the same to Cardiff, who notoriously have problems on the road in the Championship. I’m a big Russell Slade fan, I believe he will sort his side out, but curing the travel sickness is a big job.
Barnsley to beat Burton
Our first FA Cup selection is in-form Barnsley to see of Burton Albion. Barnsley under Danny Wilson have started beating decent opposition including seeing off Sheffield United 1-0 last weekend. Sam Winnall has started scoring a few goals and they should be able to get past Burton Albion who are still without a manager since Gary Rowett’s move to Birmingham. The Brewers aren’t out of form by any stretch of the imagination, but they haven’t looked as organised since his departure, they did get a creditable draw with Plymouth Argyle, but they lost to Stevenage previously.
Grimsby to beat Oxford United
The first shock on the accumulator, although there are very few places between these sides in the league standings. Grimsby sit 2nd in the Conference under manager Paul Hurst following on from their 1-0 victory over Braintree. Oxford have struggled for consistency this season, the one positive being the goalscoring form of Danny Hylton but they find themselves in a relegation battle. They’re 19th at the moment and although appear to be gradually improving, they may be humbled by a side in sensational form. The Mariners haven’t conceded in their last 3 matches and have a goal difference of +7 for that triumvirate of encounters. They could be a shock on the cards.
Rochdale to beat Northampton
It’s hard to find value backing a League One team facing non-league opposition, so I’ve plumped for a League One side facing a team from the division below. Rochdale have been in terrific form recently, including a 3-0 battering of Preston and Keith Hill’s side should take advantage of a Northampton side still recovering from an injury crisis. Enda Stevens has been recalled by Aston Villa and they gained their first win in 5 last weekend. If Rochdale play a full strength side, they should have too much for the Cobblers.
