Back in December, even the most optimistic and glass half full York City supporters would have been collected by the men in white coats had they suggested they were in for a play-off campaign. Alternatively, they would now be living a highly opulent lifestyle had they put any money on it. The Minstermen sat 22nd in the League following a 2-1 defeat to Bury on the 29th December with 2014 shaping up to be a relegation struggle to avoid slipping back into non-league.

It’s been a remarkable turnaround by Nigel Worthington and his team, who shot up the division and found themselves guaranteeing a place in the top 7 with a week remaining. The signings of Russell Penn and John McCombe were inspirational and formed a healthy mixture of exuberant youth and wise old heads who know the division inside out.

Fleetwood meanwhile can probably consider themselves disappointed to finish beneath the automatic berths and have their season extended by a few weeks. They have been there or thereabouts for the majority of the campaign, but ambitious chairman Andy Pilley hired managed Graham Alexander with the remit of promoting the club into League One.

Both teams played already promoted sides on the final day of the season, with Fleetwood coming unstuck at Champions Chesterfield whilst York uncharacteristically conceded 2 goals in the first half to Scunthorpe but came back to gain a creditable point.

The incredible statistic is that York have only conceded 8 goals since New Year’s Day, a phenomenal 22 games and one of those being against Fleetwood during their 2-1 victory at Highbury. Head to Heads often go out of the window during play off fixtures but with York winning at Fleetwood and the Lancashire side picking up all 3 points at Bootham Crescent, it reads about even, but I can’t overlook the fact that York haven’t tasted defeat since the 28th January and I fancy them to take the advantage into the second leg. York to win is 13/8 with Betfred and is today’s first football betting tip for York v Fleetwood.

With the incredible defensive prudishness that has been shown by Nigel Worthington’s side, it is easy to forgive last Saturday as a blip. Not many sides keep clean sheets against Scunthorpe and I think they can get back to impenetrable ways here. For our second bet on the League Two play-off, back both teams not to score at 10/11 with Paddy Power.

Since joining on loan from Preston, Will Hayhurst has developed into a dangerous player, he had plenty of untapped potential when in League One, but it appears Worthington’s coaching methods have rubbed off on him and he is reaping the rewards. He is still young, but has scored 2 goals since the end of March including a crucial equaliser last week. I fancy him to score anytime at 7/1 with Coral, which completes our York v Fleetwood predictions for the League Two play-off first leg.
