It’s an all Yorkshire affair to kick off Saturday’s football league action as Elland Road welcomes Sheffield Wednesday for a 12:15 kick off in the Championship.
The 33,432 strong crowd created a ferocious atmosphere on the opening day of the season, eventually seeing them over the line to beat Brighton. It was a well organised performance which saw them keep a clean sheet on Sunday against Leicester and although the initial doubts from fans over the size and quality of the squad, Brian McDermott’s men have made a commendable start to the season.
Wednesday on the other hand have lost both of their games 2-1 and been on the wrong end of a Capital One Cup shock to Rotherham. They were unlucky not to get something against QPR as they should have had a penalty or two. Dave Jones was rightfully irked by the decision, but they were awful in the first half against Burnley and there can be no excuses for that.
They were brighter in the second 45, but I think they still lack a little firepower upfront and I think Leeds can take advantage of this. I would back them at 11/10 with SkyBet to win outright. Luke Murphy seems like an astute signing in the centre of the park and although they aren’t free scoring, I think they will have too much for a shaky Wednesday defence.
I have been impressed by Dominic Poleon, both in the cup and during his cameo in the second half against Leicester, he looks lively and can make things happen. He may start the game, but if he comes on a second half substitute, he could be too pacy for tired Wednesday legs. I would take a punt on him scoring anytime at 11/5 with Bet365. He could take advantage of knock downs from the former Oldham man Matt Smith.
Wednesday looked much better in the second half against Burnley and although I have tipped the home side for a victory, I believe it may only be by a single goal. I would take 11/4 with Bet365 for a narrow victory to occur. The home side have hardly been freescoring, whilst Wednesday haven’t been keeping clean sheets, but haven’t been shipping numerous goals either. I think it will be a narrow victory and it could well be Leeds’ third 2-1 win of the season and Wednesday’s fourth 2-1 defeat of the campaign.
