Accrington Stanley vs Portsmouth Betting Tips and Prediction

A few years ago, it seemed an impossibility that Pompey would ever line up at the Crown Ground outside of a domestic cup competition. The reality is that these two teams meet in front of the Sky cameras for the Saturday lunchtime fixture in League Two.

After being tipped to sail through the season and finish comfortably top of the table, it's been a reality check for the south coast club as they were humbled 4-1 by Oxford at the weekend, followed by a Capital One Cup departure at the hands of near neighbours Bournemouth.

They achieved a League Two record crowd for their home game on Saturday and perhaps the expectation was too much of a burden as they capitulated in front of a packed out Fratton Park. The pressure should be lessened by a smaller crowd and may play into their hands.

Accrington meanwhile started life under James Beattie also losing 4-1, this was to Football League new boys Newport. However, they were responsible for possibly the shock of the round as they saw off Championship Middlesbrough 2-1 at the Riverside.

With both sides having been thumped on the opening day of the season, it's quite a tricky one to predict.

The money has been down for Portsmouth as you would expect, but Pompey looked bereft of ideas against Bournemouth midweek and also lost their last 5 away games in League One last season.

On paper, this is easier opposition, but I wouldn't want to back them outright.

I would take 5/6 with Bet365 for Portsmouth to score first. They got the opening goal against Oxford and will be keen to bounce back from successive defeats. 2 of Accrington's 3 goals this season have come after the 75th minute, so they might be slower out of the blocks.

With the home side still on the crest of a wave following their midweek exploits, it might be an option to back Accrington on the Draw No Bet market. It's 11/10 with Paddy Power, which looks decent value to me. The first home game of the season for the team an for manager James Beattie, they should be up for it and could shock Guy Whittingham's side.

And finally, both teams appear to be struggling to master the art of defending thus far this campaign, so backing both teams to score, which looks decent value at 4/5 with SkyBet.
