Championship Top Goalscorer Betting Tips for This Season

It’s no surprise that Jordan Rhodes leads the market for Championship Top Goalscorer, the former Huddersfield man raised a few eyebrows when, despite Premier League interest, he decided to join the circus at Ewood Park.

However he did manage 27 goals in a season in which the Lancashire side struggled to escape the relegation battle. 8/1 is a little short for such a competitive market and I would prefer to look elsewhere.

The market offers ¼ odds for the first 4 places, so even if there are a few surprise packages, taking a risk on a bigger price should be a worthy investment.

The prices differ greatly, so do shop around, William Hill look the best value for my first selection – (James Vaughn 66/1 William Hill). Huddersfield’s best signing of the close season is a natural goalscorer and proved it during his loan spell last season. He scored 14 goals in 33 games after Norwich agreed to send him to Yorkshire.

Barring injury problems which have blighted his career to date, he should get a decent run of games. Mark Robins is an astute manager and has also signed Jon Stead and Martin Paterson, but if fit, I can’t imagine that either would start ahead of the former Everton man. Vaughn only scored 9 times in 49 games for the Toffees, but he only started 8 times and the majority of appearances came from off the bench.

He was named the Terriers player of the season and I have spoken to a number of Norwich fans, none of them wanted to let him go.

If he can continue scoring regularly and not have his season decimated or curtailed by niggling injuries, 66/1 is tremendous value.

My next selection is a bit of an unknown quantity,  despite not following Scottish football, Johnny Russell was a name which continually popped up on my screen last season during Soccer Saturday. (Johnny Russell 40/1 Bet Victor).

He scored 31 goals in the SPL last year in a Dundee United side which finished comfortably mid-table. He also scored goals throughout loan spells earlier in his career at Forfar and Raith Rovers.

Derby County took a chance on him, shelling out £750,000 in May. He has scored 4 goals in pre-season, which isn’t an accurate yardstick as they were all against lower opposition, however with the creativity of Paul Coutts, Will Hughes, Jamie Ward and Jeff Hendrick, the Rams have a bright young team and he should benefit from plenty of chances arriving at his door.

My final selection is Leonardo Ulloa, who arrived on the south coast last season in January this year. He managed 9 goals in 17 games (10 in 20 in all competitions) despite having very little time to settle in or learn the language. (Leonardo Ulloa 16/1 William Hill).

There has been a lot of upheaval at Brighton over the summer and new manager Oscar Garcia has arrived. He is known for a more attacking style of football than his predecessor Gus Poyet and that should play to the Argentines strengths.

Even if Brighton don’t perform to the high standards of last season, I still believe he will find the net with regularity. He scored 39 goals for Almeria, a team who were subsequently relegated from La Liga.
