Burton Albion vs Derby Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview

Burton v Derby is the Friday night game from the Championship with Nigel Clough coming up against his former employers. We’ve got the three best football betting tips for the 7:45 kick off.

Burton haven’t got long to pick themselves up after the dismantling by Liverpool in the EFL Cup in midweek and they face a very difficult task against Derby.

Burton v Derby Preview

Burton

It was quite the occasion for Burton Albion on Tuesday night as they welcomed Liverpool to the Pirelli. It wasn’t the outcome they dreamed of as Liverpool, perhaps reeling from their 2-0 defeat to Burnley showed their class and hit five. Jurgen Klopp’s side were efficient, precise and deadly. Everything they weren’t at Turf Moor. Nigel Clough will need to pick his side up as there’s a quick turnaround ahead of Derby’s visit.

Luckily for the Brewers, they hadn’t started life in the Championship too badly. They were defeated in the opening match against Nottingham Forest and they perhaps were expected to see of Blackburn at the weekend, eventually drawing 2-2, but they look an exciting team who will provide their fans with a rollercoaster season.

Last season, they relied upon their defence, but that’s gone out of the window. Including the Cup, they’ve conceded 16 goals this season and despite bolstering their backline with the signing of Kyle McFadzean over the summer, it’s obvious where the area of weakness is. Against Blackburn, there was no stopping Craig Conway’s curler, but the ease at which Sam Gallagher rose to nod in must cause concern for Clough.

There are links with James Vaughn from Birmingham this week and the striker is a classy operator, but rarely, if ever, fit and might not make much difference to the side. Chris O’Grady has been at his battering-ram style best this season whilst Stuart Beavon has provided the support.

Burton beat an out-of-sorts Sheffield Wednesday at the Pirelli around 10 days ago, so they will feel confident they can get something here. Many are tipping them to go down, so the first target must be 40 points, but on some of their recent displays, they will trouble many established Championship outfits.

Derby County

Derby were also in action on Tuesday night and got taken to penalties by League Two Carlisle. They eventually prevailed in the shoot-out, but it ended 14-13 and Keith Curle’s side weren’t going down quietly. It’s been a fairly low-key start to the season for Nigel Pearson and his side. In League and Cup, they’ve only scored three goals in total this season, but they’ve looked very good at the back.

They held Villa to a goalless draw at the iPro last weekend, but the 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Barnsley must surely be a concern for the Rams’ fans. Every Derby betting preview that I’ve written this season, I’ve complimented their firepower, but we haven’t seen much evidence of it yet.

Craig Forsyth got their last goal in the league and Richard Keogh scored in the EFL Cup first round. Darren Bent finally notched against Carlisle, which is a start, but the barren spells for Chris Martin, Nick Blackman and Johnny Russell (admittedly the latter hasn’t had too many minutes on the pitch). Tom Ince has looked lively, but hasn’t added his name to scoresheet either.

They’ve been hard to break down with Richard Keogh and Jason Shackell excellent at the back, but if you fail to hit the back of the net, it’s going to be hard to reach the play-offs. Pearson will make changes for this match you would imagine with the likes of Will Hughes and Chris Martin likely to return to the starting 11 after featuring on the bench against Carlisle.

I worry about Derby’s away form and the way they conceded both goals to Barnsley. They only got going towards the end of the game and Adam Davies was required to be at his best. They should find the Brewers defence an easier assignment than that of the Tykes.

Burton v Derby Predictions

I worry about Derby’s lack of goals. Even against a defence as generous as Burton’s, will they score enough to win this encounter? Burton played impressively against Sheffield Wednesday and they should repeat that performance once again. Clough will be determined to get one over his old club and I think backing the Brewers on the Draw No Bet is a sensible proposition for my first football tip.

On one hand, you have a side who are involved in high scoring affairs and another team who have specialised in Under 2.5 goals this campaign. It’s hard to call for a goalscorer bet. This one may open up as we move towards the 90th minute. There have been late goals in plenty of matches featuring Burton recently.

Anytime Goalscorer Prediction

Tom Naylor has been involved in the goalscoring action (at both ends) and should be in the thick of it once again, in the latest Burton vs Derby betting odds he’s a massive 5/1 to score anytime or 22/1 to score first at bet365 (as short as 9/1 with other bookies). Naylor always pops up at the right time and at a bigger price is a decent bet against his former employers.
